as for the use of liseuse in french, ebooks in general are just starting out here, and almost no-one knows about them. therefore, it's quite normal that *no* word has become common usage yet. however, "liseuse" is used by most of the french blogs talking about dedicated reading devices. the general public has no idea what an ebook is to start with, whatever word you choose, you have to explain it anyway. |

![]() No one is pushing the term, except maybe in the Lounge where that sort of thing is accepted and even encouraged. I actually thing this thread should be in the lounge because we are starting to move toward the ridiculous. If you don't like the term, don't use it. Pretty simple, really. |

I agree with Kaz.
![]() We're all free to use whatever term we like; but none of them would get a majority voting for it in a poll. |

Terrible. I'm going to use Ereader when talking generally about the devices and the brand name when talking about a specific one like Kindle.

![]() When speaking to people outside my house, ereader or ebook are the most common terms. I only refer to it as the brand Kindle when someone is specifically asking about the various brands of ereaders. |

I call mine "My Reader" to my family but sadly even when I call it an ebook reader to friends and co workers they have no idea what I am talking about until I show it to them and explain what it does. The name liseuse sounds a little sophisticated to me.........how the heck DO you pronounce it?

First of all, how is it pronounced? Is it lice-use? Not to be insulting, but the word lice is disturbing. With all due respect, lice are small insects contracted by people who don't bath often. I commonly use the term ebook reader, which is not confused with an ebook which one reads on an ebook reader. In addition, if I told people I was using a liseuse, they would not know what I was talking about. However, if I use the term ereader, that would be an understandable term.

I was thinking about how "loan words" in English tend to come from the country that introduced the concept. And since the first eink reader came from Japan...
I plugged "electronic book" into Google translations for English to Japanese. A google image search did come up with lots of photos of electronic book readers,so it seems to be a legit translation. So-- the term everyone should use for electronic book readers is: 電子書籍 |
