Well I do not know as to whether it was charged or not already, but I just plugged it in on the wall charger, and it took like 1 hour the most for the red light to turn off. Is that normal?
Anytime I tried to charge it on the computer through the USB , it showed the red light at first, then turn off pretty soon. I don't know, but the battery only showed half when I first opened it. Then it keeps showing full all the time now, and then yesterday it was when after trying to use a 8G SD card (with no success), the device stopped working, not even turned on. Then I did the reset thing with the paper clip, and after that it did turn on(showing full battery again!). I am going to use it as much as I can and see if it does it again. Right now it is "supposed" to be charged...let's see what happens. |

I will let you know that if you keep an SD card in the reader the battery drains MUCH faster, made mine so dead no red light would come on till it was on usb charger for over 2 hours....

Wait wait, you telling me that if the battery is flat, then there is no red light on till it charges for a while? If that's the case I feel a bit better.

Seriously, forget about usb and charge thru the power port using the Sony wall charger or a Sony PSP charger. There are dozens and dozens of posts here explaining why.

I have been recharging my 505 using the PC USB and it has not been any problem whatsoever. What might be the problem(s) with using the PC USB? Thanks! . . . . . Pete |

Nothing critical, but there a few potential traps as it'll stop charging if the computer goes to sleep or if the device is dismounted and then the USB connection appears to result in a more rapid battery drain than when unplugged! It also won't charge from wall USB chargers and you can't do anything else with the device.
In contrast, a PSP-style charger to the yellow round socket will charge it more rapidly, without the potential dismount issues and will even let you keep reading while doing so. |

Wayamauro-
Yes I did have an sd card in my 505 for a few days and it totally drained the battery to where no lite was on, I plugged it into my USB, walked away came back a couple of hours later flipped the switch and got the red lite finally (was so relieived because lots of threads indicated I would need a psp charger. But I let it charge off the usb and voila all was good. I did also take out that sd card..... No more probs since then battery lasts a long time as advertised. |

I have been using just the usb port connected to my computer and I haven't experienced any problems.
Question I have is , "did anyone experience problems when they started to charge their 505 from psp charger or sony charger?". Power surges? Burning out the battery? I guess I would be interested if someone was just using the usb computer charging for 1 year and then switched to wall charger and in 1 or 2 months started to experience problems. I only charge my reader every 2 or 3 weeks for 5 or 6 hours and then remove it. I understand that some people have problems charging their 505 but I'm just trying to find out if ANYONE who just used the usb computer connection ONLY and never used the wall charger had a problem charging the 505. If you use both and then develop problems , could be caused by usb or wall charger. Also, if someone only used the wall charger and NEVER ever used the usb to charge the 505 , did you ever experience a problem charging the battery. |

If the red light is on, it is charging. If the red light is not on it is not charging. If you plug your reader into a USB wall charger, I don't think the red light will come on. If it does, it will probably only be on for a few moments and then it will go out.
I haven't tried a USB wall charger myself, but I've read quite a few posts here from people who have and it didn't work for them. What I have done personally is have my Reader plugged into my computer and used the eject button within the Sony software. I did not immediately disconnect my Reader from the computer. The red charging light did go out, but I just figured it wasn't charging or discharging at the time.--Wrong. By leaving it plugged into my computer after ejecting, the battery meter dropped two bars in a couple hours! Lesson learned! Always physically disconnect the reader after "ejecting" it in the software! dordale ![]() |

Dordale: Exactly!
richman: Don't read too much into the word 'problems' - these are problems about the device not charging at a particular time, nothing more than that - certainly nothing along the lines you suggest. For what it's worth, if I run really low on power I'll plug mine into a PSP charger, but normally I'll be loading a book before it gets that low and will leave it connected to the USB cable (and not ejected) for a while to have it charge that way. |
