I really liked the rocker on the iLiad. The software is based on the DR1000S, although eReader and Adobe Digital Editions are new, which is a significant improvement on the iLiad. Note that iRex is still the only EInk Reader vendor that includes DRM but allows 3rd party apps on their devices.

Verizon is providing the service, but the "customer" is iRex. There are some indications that iRex/Verizon might charge for web access (say), but downloads fo newspapers and ebooks from B&N will be free. In any case, you can turn off the wireless and never us it. The USB approach to downloads still works.

Wow.

You won't actually be "doing business" with Verizon... you will be B&N's customer... they just use Verizon's network to provide the connectivity.

Typically to the extent that I had to call them (no exaggeration) every month for 6 months in a row to have them remove "features" or change the plan back to what I signed up for and reverse the overages they had tried to charge me for (for about 80 to 100 dollars each month).

I never had those problems with Sprint before I went to Verizon, or AT&T since I left Verizon. In my experience they are the worst/most dishonest of the whole lot. I also would not trust them to have their cellular connection working in a couple of years. If it was ANY other carrier, I'd be more comfortable that that feature would continue to work/be available in the future, but not with Verizon.
My point is that the the three other devices with wireless service use AT&T or Sprint, which makes that aspect utterly worthless for those of us living in places like North Eastern Nevada. Unfortunately no carrier covers the whole United States, which is why it is nice to have different choices.

Oh, and seriously don't get me started with AT&T. [Rotten sons of... ]

This could be very close to being the perfect E-ink device. I hope iRex will become very popular with it. There are a few I think very important software features that need to work right though:

1. RSS Reader like Google Reader

2. Collaborative Note-taking using Google Sidewiki on all contents, send pictures of handwriting to Sidewiki and have services automatically recognise handwriting

3. Google Books and Project Gutenberg

4. Beam any page to it over the Internet from any laptop "Browser extension to add anything to your read-list"

Since you were able to fiddle with the Pocketbook 302 sample, other than the difference in touch tech used, I wonder how close in functionality the production versions will be...for me the active display wins if the pen used is as fat as what is shown . I could add something to make it grippable for me w/o any hand strain.

Why?! Why?! Why Sony could not make a screen 8" with the proper aspect ratio!?

Wait, isn't this the reason why there wasn't a Kindle in Europe? Because they'd have to sign deals with various providers to get complete coverage? And nobody said you wouldn't have coverage, if you bought a Kindle! At least, not in any review I've seen... They all say, you can download via whispernet. Not you can download via whispernet if you can access whispernet, which you can't unless you live in a populated area.

So, I presume you can't buy the Kindle because it doesn't have a whispernet function in your neck of the wood...

(sorry, had to let this out...)

No matter the provider, it's always good to have choices. But they should also bring out a version without inherent mobile phone carrier. That way you can use your current provider (if you have one) and everybody should be able to use it (no matter where they live).

And what's the proper aspect ratio for book readers?

Definitely sounds like they released it a little early, but given what I read when I was thinking of buying the DR1000, the matter is not necessarily bigger than waiting for firmware updates. I guess the release of the SonyDaily might have made them push the release?

I'm definitely curious about this, but I don't feel especially put out that it's not released i Europe until next year (during first half of 2010 according to the Engadget hands-on article) - by that time it might have the worst bugs resolved.

I wonder about the quality of the flip bar. I liked the idea of it as such, on the Iliad, but I sincerely hope this one won't turn out to have the same "stickyness" issues as the Iliad (a 'short' single-page turn was sometimes interpreted by the device as 'long' 5-page turn - it was a hardwise issue).
