Here's the UK's Register take on the partnership: iRex waggles ebook at US Best Buy bunk-up for Verizon-backed Kindle-botherer By Bill Ray "Digital reader manufacturer iRex is about to launch into the USA with a Verizon-connected ebook, putting more pressure on the Kindle in what could be a winning move for Adobe. The device is part of the iRex's Digital Reader range and branded the DR800SG. The company announced a deal with Barnes & Noble back in August, but the New-York-Times-reported addition of Best Buy and Verizon makes the 8.1-inch-screen-stylus-equipped-$399 device much more likely to compete with Sony to drive the Kindle out of business." http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/09/23/irex_verizon/ |

I'll just point out that Best Buy has carried Sony Readers for quite some time. Their "training" to demo the devices was pretty empty, though... most of them didn't know they even had it, and the rest could do no more than open the box for us (once they found it) and stand back. I'm not too impressed with a $400 price tag, either... that ain't cheap, by any means. Hopefully they'll work a bit harder to promote and demo the device to consumers... but knowing Best Buy, I doubt it. |

The 7" Sony Daily Edition will also be $399. The DR800SG is probably more capable than the Daily Edition, although they are close enough in features that individual preferences will come into play (e.g. finger touch on reflective screen vs pen touch on clearer screen).

6" - $299 8" - $399 It's not so bad when you put it in those terms. Just be glad it's not $800 like the iLiad.

Also since it seems like so far only Best Buy will carry the DR800SG, you will be saddle with at least a $23.94 sales tax (that's 6%, of course depending which state you're in, it could be as high as 10.25% - $41, yes Chicago sucks!). Hopefully it will be distributed by other online retailers so the tax can be avoided!

I don't like the white cover. Since I keep my reader in my bag, that's the last color I would ever choose for a cover. |

I like it and the format support looks pretty good. The big questions in my mind are suspend, speed and battery life. Hopefully engadget will get some hands on time with video.

I wonder if this "real" picture is doctored or not. The black on the screen just looks too awesomely black. Would buy just for this. And for the cool looks of course |

It's heating up in the ereader race

Well with IREX throwing its hat into the ring, it is heating up around here. I thought the Kindle was the best game in town, not so sure anymore. Lot more wireless options (that was the main reason for buying the Kindle). |
