It also may be the heat. The PEZ locked inside it's package...a dozen locked inside a cardboard box, many boxes locked inside a metal plane cargo hold, then sitting for days inside a metal UPS/FedEx truck.
I can almost bet that the temp in the van alone could get over 100-120 degrees C (212-248 F). My unit now is starting to resemble my grandmother's thighs. Question for you Robert. On the back of the device are 4 black rubber pads. Am i correct in assuming that beneath these are 4 screws to separate the back from the device? If so... How feasable would it be to remove all the mechanics of the device and leave only the front and back shell aside for painting purposes? Is the eInk display affixed to the front opening with some sort of glue? I assume that taking the unit apart like this would most likely void some, if not all, warranty. |

My red unit looks perfect, and it is only after a few minutes of usage that you see the bubbling to the right edge of frame. This is very slight and as reported, can easily be smoothen down. They are gone once the unit has been turned off for some time. If this is the only problem I can expect, I am more than happy to live with the minor defect, than to worry about the hassles and cost for a RMA. |

This might be game over for me.

I say this very reluctantly because I really wanted this to work out, but my blue PocketPro's finish *is* getting worse and it's doing so in a slightly different way. I'd never had the same level of smudging or wrinkling others had been seeing. Just a noticeable but livable level that was not changing. This seemed consistent with the theory that the rubberized paint simply needed more time to set. Yesterday, however, I began to see a very slight tearing along the upper right corner of the front of the device -- to the right of the EZ reader logo. Basically it looked like the sharp edge of the device was starting to tear through the rubberized coating. I have barely used it and it's not been more than 15 feet from my house since I opened the package. (I sat outside with it for about ten minutes, not in direct sunlight or any great level of heat.) There is no reason why the coating should be tearing this way. I've attached a picture showing what I'm talking about. I am 100% certain this tearing was NOT there two days ago. ![]() I left the device sitting on a table all night and all day today, not in direct sunlight or anything. Just went back to check on it and now the tearing has spread all the way around the radius of the corner. There is also another tear beginning about an inch lower along the same right-hand edge. I am very unhappy. At this point, trying to decide whether to try exchanging for a black/white model or going for a refund. |

It looks like you have not removed the screen protector. Pull it off and the screen will look better and the problem should go away.

Given that I was fearing from the beginning that there'd be a problem, I didn't even bother removing the screen protector. I'm pessimistic that way.

So you don't have a lot of consumer, if not it will be impossible without a large number of people for checking this.

Remember this is an electronic book reader that you are referring to, not a cell phone, so the numbers for "a lot of consumer" are relative. Even a big seller like the Kindle does not have "a lot of consumer" compared to electronic devices like cell phones or media players. My *guess* is, that for a independent distributor, a few hundred per day is pretty good business. For those numbers, it does not take an army of workers to manage the distribution. In the electronic book reader category, what would you consider "a lot of consumer"?

I seriously doubt that Amazon is able to hand check ALL of the Kindle that goes out of their office, even if they didn't sell as much as Kindle as Apple sell's iPhone (and same for Sony with their PRS line)

This article predicts that Kindle will sell up to 750,000 devices in a full year. http://www.readersread.com/blog/801081 That is less than 3000 per work day, and Kindle is the current biggest seller in the electronic book market, AFAIK. Two years ago Amazon had 13,900 employees, so they should have no trouble with the distribution of less than 3000 units per day. If a single independent reseller of a competing brand can do even 10% of that they are probably doing pretty good. So again, what would you consider "a lot of consumer" in the e-book arena? |

The discussion of how many angels can dance on the head of a pin ... I mean how many units Astak will sell ... is pretty irrelevant. As a business owner who deals with warehousing and shipping, I would say that what matters is how much time you want to allocate to each inspection. Unless you have a really badly located warehouse, you can always find more workers in this economy.
Think of it this way -- unless you believe that the act of inspection is much, much longer than the act of picking, packing, and shipping, then the number of total units sold is irrelevant. If the company has the capacity to do one then they can have the capacity to do both. So say that you spend under two minutes opening and repacking the contents. Add a minute to thoroughly inspect the device for cosmetic issues. Heck you can probably also check to make sure the unit turns on and off properly in that time as well. That's three minutes, or 20 inspections per hour. Call it 15-18 per hour because nobody works at full speed all the time unless the boss is standing on them. Assume the person you choose to do this is paid above minimum wage -- call it $10/hr. Makes sense -- you don't need specialized skills. It's a pretty routine job. So each inspection is costing you around 60 cents. That's still less than the likely labor cost of picking the unit from a rack, transporting it to a scanning and staging area, boxing it for shipment, printing the shipping label, etc. |
