I'm reading through Alexander McCall Smith's "Ladies No. 1 Detective Agency" series (on book 4 now) - I do enjoy the gentleness & hopefulness - in the midst of a less than salubrious reality. Kitchsy yes. Sometimes didatic. But sweet.
Tried the "Isabel Dalhousie" series - It was real work just to finish the first one. Doubt I'll continue with these. Anyone read more & have recommendations? |

Finished The Reader and I'm now interested to see the movie and see how it compares. I could see it making a really great movie and Kate Winslet making a great Hanna.
Now reading Flash Forward by Robert Sawyer and hoping to be done before the the Thursday premiere. Mel |

I just finished "Sons and Lovers" -- I thought it good, but I also could clearly see where it had been edited/seamed together....was not nearly as smoothly written as "Of Human Bondage" which I read prior.
and it had too many flowers and flower descriptions. ![]() |

Quite honestly, MelC, I don't think you'll be disappointed. The Reader is one of the few movies that does its source book proud. Cheers. N

I'm going back and forth between The New Yorker and Geraldine Brooks' People of the Book. I don't know if I'll finish A Monster's Notes.

I just finished Isaac's Storm by Erik Larson, which I really enjoyed. Not sure what I'll read next.

According to the guy who also translated lots of Dostoevsky (along with his wife) the state of the recent translations previous to his caused him to want to translate it himself, as they apparently took most of the fun out of Dumas's writing.

Currently reading The Three Musketeers and Nefretti by Michelle Moran which I'm enjoying very much. And just finished The White Queen and The Lost Symbol.

I'm reading The Love Song of J. Edgar Hoover by country singer Kinky Friedman of Kinky Friedman and the Texas Jewboys fame.
It's a one of a series of detective novels featuring Kinky Friedman as a NYC private investigator. The ones I've read are pretty good and ought to be available as e-books. |

I started AND finished last night Agatha Christie's "And Then There Were None." Like her other books, it was a little tough to start because of the huge cast of characters, but it was completely riveting! A good deal at $3.59
