finally!

I was starting to wonder how epub could ever be considered a standard format without any "normal" (WYSIWYG) editors. Love what you've done with Sigil. Thanks!

Today was the first time I discovered Sigil.

It is exactly what I have been looking for. Thank you! Thank you!

I was impressed how smoothly it ran and especially how it did not corrupt my xhtml code when I saved as ePub.

I take great care in producing clean xhtml code and always use Amaya to validate that it conforms to the WC3 standard.

Sigil is the only app I have ever used for conversion that did not produce horrendous code "under the hood".
It made only two changes to my file -- changed my UTF-8 to UTF-16, and changed my "Transitional" to "Strict" Both good changes in my view.

Congratulations for this much needed application. I shall use it every day.

Yes, this is paramount for me too. Sigil will not only preserve your code if it doesn't have any errors, but it will detect them if it does and then fix them. And if your code is a mess, it will try to clean it to the best of its capabilities and pretty-print the resulting XHTML.

It's a bit rough around the edges in other areas, but I'm working on it.

For my purposes I am very happy with Sigil the way it is. It creates beautiful ePub files from my html files and works as smooth as silk into the bargain.

I have hundreds of html ebook files because it is a format that I have created as backup for many years. I intend to change over from .prc to ePub in the near future and together with my backup files Stigil will be indispensible to me.

Anything new that may come along will be a added bonus.

Great work!

Again, it takes enthusiastic amateurs who devote their own personal time to develop a great tool. More than that, an essential tool, without which most reader devices would be poorly suited to displaying the "standard" ePub books.

Makes you wonder what the hell is going on out there, doesn't it?

Thumbs up

Hi Valloric,

First for your work on Sigil. I really like it sofar.
Second I came across a reference to a program you might or might not already have seen and you might be able to 'steal' a few ideas from, namely Kompozer
( http://kompozer.net )
It has for example: css editor, search&replace ;-)

Thanks,

Joop

Thanks for the suggestion. I've actually been meaning to take a look at Kate editor's source code.

In your revisions

I would prefer that using the space bar does NOT insert a non-breaking space. I have not tested to see whether Sigil does, but Kompozer does. It causes display problems on the Sony reader with line breaks in awkward places.

An option setting would be great for those who need a typed spaced to be non-breaking.

BTW Kompozer also deletes unnecessarily when you right click paste instead of Control V.

Kompozer in its current alpha version loads faster, has a better interface that doesn't intermittently crash on source code view, but some of its functions just don't work (to be expected in an alpha) compared to the stable version. It does display quite similarly to the presentation in the e book.

If you should adopt part of it PLEASE kill off the automatic default to alternative text (useless in my PRS505) in placing images. It demands alternative text unless you select otherwise.

You're getting a bit ahead of yourself.

Sigil doesn't. Why should I care that Komposer does? Sigil has zero relation to it.

If you've experienced crashes with Sigil's Code View, please report them to the tracker (with test cases) so I can fix them. They're not going to go away by themselves. But I personally haven't seen Sigil crash in a long time... I could just be lucky.

I have no intention of adopting any part of it. I never have. I appreciated the suggestion to maybe look at their code and see if there's something interesting there, but Komposer is built on a completely different (and incompatible) foundation that there's really no point.

No DEB package, but the next version will have a binary installer (the kind you use on Windows) and that should be easy to use.

Hi Valloric,

first of all: thanks for Sigil, it looks like a perfect solution for creating epub documents.

I would like to share my first experiences, thoughts and wishes with Sigil:
- it's a bit slow when editing a document of 50 chapters (but if I'm correct, you're allready working on that)
- a css-editor would be very much appreciated! At this moment, I open up the epub file (after renaming it to .zip) to get access to the css file inside. Quite tedious and risky!
- something of a script engine would be nice, for example to automaticaly insert "drop capital" code at the start of every chapter
- font management (I'm not really sure about this, but my BeBook does not seem to find the Garamond font file which I copied to my Bebook font directory. However, when I manually include the font file in my epub file, it will display my Garamond text correctly). This would mean maintaining a font directory in the epub file and adjusting the css file accordingly.

Of course it is not my intention to get you to insert a css editor, script engine and font management right away, I more would like to have your (and others) opinion about these three points.

Cheers,
Johan.
