PRS-600 today I decided to keep my PRS-600

Some people seem to dislike the screen of PRS-600. I don't have any problem with it because the interactive touch screen makes the device so useful. The navigation of the items is intuitive and so fun.

The device is not perfect, but with the price and functionality, it is almost perfect to me.

... a good mock up of my thread.. actually, now I finally agree to this.. the usefulness of the features of prs600 outweighs the issue..

I wish someout out there found a way to lessen that glare...

No offense.

Just wanted to point out that there are positive side of the device.

Obviously, however, there are a little glare problem. I also have iRex DR1000S and it doesn't have much of glare problems even though it has a touch screen. I guess Sony can do the same.

DR1000S implement touch function by a capacitive touch sensor that is different from Sony's. In DR1000S the touch layer is beneath the e-ink layer nor over the e-ink layer in Sony PRS.So the touch layer does not affect the clarity. But this tech has some defect too. You only tap the screen by a special stylus nor by your finger or some others. DR1000S need more power because of the capacitive touch sensor. So you may have to charge it every 10 hours, but 2 weeks in PRS.

Thanks for that explanation. I didn't understand the difference.

I've had mine for just over a week now; I can see that the glare\reflection issue seems to turn up in artificial lighting areas moreso than natural light. However, by angling the ereader very slightly when reading (and not uncomfortable to me) I find this eliminates it.

I haven't got a past ereader to compare it with; I've only used things like an ipod or ipaq to read, and ANYTHING is better than those bright-shining screens when it comes to reading *grins*

In summary - as a first unit, I've accepted this slight gripe, and it isn't interrupting my pleasure after a week or so!

Hello, everyone, I a new here, but I have been here reading since prs 600 showed up here, and I found lots of posts here discussing the glare issue, maybe some of you would like to consider another choice, onyx boox, which handle the touch sceen with wacom technology as iliad, but if you like the intuitive way of finger touch, onyx boox is not fit for u, for me, I can bear the lose of intuitive touch to have a nicer screen. you can find the discussion about boox here

What "glare"?

The PRS-600's screen is a little more reflective that that of the 505, due to the touch layer, but not to an extent that I can believe many people would find troublesome. I really see no different in actual "image quality" between the 505 and the 600.

I thought that the DR1000S used resistive touchscreens as well, rather than a capacitive one, with only the buttons being capacitive-type. and part of the battery issues the thing had was because it would do things like auto-crop PDF's, which would mean that it was doing more processing in the background than something like a PRS-series reader does.

Yes, the 600 has a "GLARE" problem. There's no semantic fault with this statement, that's how the word is used by both laymen and industry. Any undesirable reflection of ambient light is synonymous with glare, and with my Kindle I do not have to work to find a good angle the way I do with the 600. I'll probably be keeping it but I do know I'd like the device better sans the touchscreen and with hardware buttons instead. I thought the touch would be good for the dictionary but half the words I look up don't have entries anyway. And I just don't see myself using annotation much, let alone the doodle feature.

No. As has been said repeatedly, the iRex devices use a Wacom touch-screen which is physically "behind" the eInk display, and hence has no impact on image quality. That's why they will only work with a stylus, and can't be used with fingers.
