Development is frozen until Sony releases new 505 firmware (hopefully later this month). Perhaps they'll include a locale-based updater to replace the US-centric one available now.

Best is to avoid RTF. Save it as HTML and convert to EPUB or LRF with calibre.
Otherwise, you need to "unicodify" the RTF file. It can be done by this utility, or the following magic sequence:
1) Open file in WordPad
2) Select All (Ctrl-A)
3) Change font encoding to Western
4) Save

Thank you. "western" works (unfortunately it's reversed inconviniences - now I can read the book, but tags - title,author - are not in the cyrillic).
I will try CALIBRE(I guess utility) as well.

Caution: the prs505 battery is not user replaceable. Sony's cost for this maintenance?
$280.00. It is designed obselesence!!! (sp)

Hi, I just got a PRS505 in France, and like many others here would like to change the language to English... it's now in version 1.3

I tried using PRScustomizer (designed my own logo too, was very excited!) but after flashing nothing has changed and it's still in French, and no logo. After searching the forums I saw that I should downgrade the version using the updater from sony and only then customise - however the updater from Sony checks the version number on my reader and says it's up to date and does nothing

An earlier comment on this thread says to unzip the updater and change the version number in some file, but i only got the option to download an exe file from the sony website so I don't know if I can change anything there?

Is there any way out of this, or am I destined to learn French? And if so, does anyone know a good ebook for learning French? ;o)

The exe file is actually an archive. Unzip it and follow the directions you read.

that really depends on the user. 2 screws are not really a big issue, the rest is straight forward. feel free to get it done by someone in a mobile phone shop for 20 euro

Yep. Just flash the image using Igorsk's universal flasher.

Oh my god. Thank you so very, very much! You saved me from an unrecoverable bricked 505!

I have a UK 505, and after playing around with the PRS customizer to see if I could implement anything else fun, I bricked it. Soft reset would let me access the device as a drive on my computer, and the books showed up fine on the library, but it would do nothing other than that. Hard reset didn't do anything, maybe I was doing it wrong. Anyway, I found a link to a 1.1 US firmware update, but... my 505 is from the UK, so 1.2 is "already updated". There is no 1.2 firmware update on the UK support site, that I could find. So just as I was beginning to lose hope, I opened up the 1.1 firmware update in winrar, extracted it all, did what you said, and voila, my 505 updated to 1.1, then to 1.2, and now it's back to normal!

Anyway, I registered just to say thank you, so THANK YOU!
