I thought the review was pretty fair. He makes a good point about the 600's glare:

"Pack in touch screens, pack in SD card readers, search, dictionary, library-book borrowing. You can pack it all in, but never, ever at the cost of that primary role. With the $300 6" resistive-touchscreen Touch Edition, Sony fails to heed this simple agenda."

The 505 compares favorably to both devices and Sony quit making them!

to iRex's Digital Reader, which actually has a touchscreen. It's too bad Sony couldn't figure out (or buy) iRex's secret.
It's hardly a secret that iRex uses Wacom technology.

While a lot of his points were at least partly fair, the overuse of the word kindle was extremely tiresome and the complaint about the lack of a memory card slot seems more than a little churlish when the included memory will be good for at least 500 books.
Agree on the Kindle mentions...it reminds me of the iPod drops in every music player review..."could this be the fabled iPod killer?"

Memory cards aren't just because we need more space. I much prefer to do transfers and sneakernet-style sharing with SD or CF cards. I also can use cards for many different purposes with several different devices. I have enough books to max out the internal memory, but that isn't an issue to me at all. The SD slot gives me some degree of modularity.

Sony didn't pay the reviewer enough, or refused to place an add on their blog....

Fair enough on the alternative transfer point, that will be a valid use for some people, but for an entry-level product cutting it out seems a sensible when its primary use will be covered by the internal memory.

Yeah Sony is talented at half-screwing everyone. Want to use a card? Get the expensive one with the inferior (as if the 505/300 isn't insulting enough) screen!

To be honest, I was shocked that early versions supported SD...that's very uncharacteristic of Sony. Normally I'd suspect they'd only offer MemoryStick or whatever their proprietary silliness is called. The whole proprietary approach to ebook readers is quite a turnoff.

1) He obviously hasn't figured out how to hold it, when he's reading in bed.
2) I bought a 700 built in reading light, no problem with reflected glare when reading in bed.
End result (for me). I went from my 505 to the 700 and haven't looked back.

Looking at the new sony range, it does seem like the designers were told there had to be a wider variation in features between each model, presumably to make it easier for marketing.

Even though a feature like a touchscreen doesn't really improve the core function of an ebook reader it would seem like a fairly big difference in a comparison between the 600 and the 300, not to mention being a different from kindles as well.

What Sony needs to do is re-introduce the 505 as the "Reader Classic". Pretty much keep it the same (same form-factor, same slots, same screen, etc), but maybe bump up the processor/controller chips.

Totally agree. Add folder support, and I'm sold.

It's not because Japanese origin, its human nature. You feel more comfortable to swipe left to right by your right hand (assume you are right-handed).

I don't know, right to left seems more natural, IMO. It's how I turn a page (on a book, newspaper, ...). Isn't right to left how OS X works?

Although I think I would prefer some mode where just touching the screen would advance a page, for casual reading (who needs to waist all that effort swiping).
