The title doesn't sound very upbeat, but hearing him explain how drastically and steadily violence has decreased from the time we were hunter-gatherers through the Middle Ages to today puts things in a whole new perspective. that is refreshing and encouraging, and it makes me happy too (which is a nice change, because listening to the news invariably makes me depressed and discouraged. maybe i should stop. ). i'm happy you shared that info with us.

That is so ultimately feline! Wonder what it is about cats and boxes? I have to keep my ukulele cases closed when the ukes aren't in them because the cat thinks they're beds.

oh, i know !! it's like boxes have some kind of special gravitational field that only cats can feel. you should see her trying to get into a box that's barely big enough for her head : she can spend hours just shoving around the room. she's insane.

Isn't "insane" sort of a given when felines are involved?

Just as "selective hearing" can be used to describe goggies?

don't bother buying toys for cats - just point them in the direction of a box and watch them spend hours hiding and sleeping

well, i just had a brilliant evening. i went out to dinner with some friends to (belatedly) celbrate my birthday. good food, margaritas (so i'm a bit drunk), and i even got some pressies, and on my way home from the restaurant, i passed in front of a café and noticed my beloved, irreplaceable umbrella in an urn propping open the door !! now, the irony is, when i first lost this umbrella, about 2 months ago, i went to all the places i thought i *might* have forgotten it, *including* this café, and they told me "no no, haven't seen it". so it was, to say the least, unexpected to notice it sitting there. but i am so happy to have recovered it ! it's a very old umbrella, probably older than i am, and they don't make them like that anymore. no matter how hard the wind blows, this umbrella will never be turned inside out. probably, i will fly away, with the umbrella as a sail, before that happens. and since i lost it i've been very sad every time i think of it. so i really can't say how happy i am to have recovered it ! purely by chance, just walking past. and i had a very funny conversation with 4 guys who were the last clients in the café, at a table just outside the door, when i noticed it and picked it up.

an excellent night, really. who would have thought, an umbrella could count so much ?

Zelda, if I ever do get to Paris (or you get to Northern Virginia) we will definitely have to go somewhere to have a few margaritas, my favorite beverage!

Congrats on recovering your umbrella. It does seem like the things they make nowadays just don't last like they used to.
