actually Newfies don't need huge yards and believe it or not make wonderful apartment dogs. they are so incredibly mellow and don't do the hyper running, yapping and so on. this is not to infer they don't play! but they certainly take the cue from the human

That is definitely information we need to keep between the two of us! We saw an ad for Newfie puppies the other day and my kids started begging!

What about the hairness indoors? Are they copious shedders? As you may or may not know, I'm in the preliminary stages of dog shopping for when I retire and can be at home with a pup.

We have a Shetland Sheepdog (Sheltie) and the hair is an issue. What's worse is trying to give him a bath. The only place big enough is a bathtub and it takes forever (at least an hour) to dry him. The same could be said for the Golden Retriever we had when Shannon and Zack were younger, although it wasn't as bad as it is with the Sheltie. We also have 2 Shih-tsus who are much easier to groom but took forever to house-train. The are notoriously stubborn, but now they are a great addition to the family. The only problem with them is that they have to be trimmed every couple of months.

I would get another Golden but would not get another Sheltie. I love him, but he's very vocal and doesn't like it when we leave the house.

you know how labs, sheperds, huskies etc are constantly shedding? the Newfies have a totally different coat. they "blow" their coat twice a year, theoretically the winter coat and the summer coat, but you can't set a calendar by it. once this "blow" is over, and you have done a really good bathe and groom, there is virtually no further shedding.

they do drool but not like hounds. the worse of the drooling is when working as obviously that is their sweat. when playing it can happen, and of course if you are eating a steak and they are not, you'll get drool.

they are smart smart SMART! my first Newfie, when my kids were little, had a vocabulary of several hundred words. some of the really important words; camping, car ride, scouts, search and rescue call and so on... we changed to German, and then eventually had to start spelling using different inflections. I noticed this pup doesn't have quite the vocab and wondered what was wrong, but then had the moment. I live alone. so I try to talk to her more often.

any questions you have feel free to ask! I love eto talk about them!

Thats the way our Bernese does it as well, twice a year they more or less "explode" and we have wall to wall carpeting instead of hardwood floors

But it's a couple of weeks at a time, then during the rest of the year, there is no shedding to speak about really.

I'm happy that we've hashed out what I hope is a workable budget for the next three months that allows us to put money in savings. And it allows for book purchases, too Now if we can only avoid the unexpected "oh crap" things that usually derail our budgets...

I'm happy that I recently read Der Sandmann by ETA Hoffmann. Damn, it's a nice little piece of literature.

Violently happy

I'm happy because I'm more encouraged today than yesterday about the outlook for humanity. Today I listened to Stephen Pinker giving a talk entitled "A brief history of violence" on iTunes. It's a free 2007 podcast from "TED Talks". The title doesn't sound very upbeat, but hearing him explain how drastically and steadily violence has decreased from the time we were hunter-gatherers through the Middle Ages to today puts things in a whole new perspective. I don't think I'll ever look at those who nostalgically pine for the "good old days" in the same way again.

His message is that despite all the dire news stories of crime and craziness we're bombarded with daily, this does appear to be the best of all possible times to be alive. Our fascination with the negative blinds us to the tremendous progress we've made as a species.

Here's hoping this post will make someone else happy.
