Wallcraft seems to have a workaround for the crashing. In the thread about the battery he writes:

Quote:
I have read several ePubs on the Pocket Pro without crashes. I exit to the file system whenever I take a break, and that might help although it is hard to tell for sure. I have noticed that the bookmark seems to only be accurate to the page (as defined by Adobe), so it does not always come back at exactly the right place.

3. When it restarts, does it come back up in the book you were reading and the place you were reading, or do you have to start over?

This does sound like a nuisance doesn't it.
The Hanlin EZ Reader rarely locks up but occasionally it may, depending on how it is used. I find that that I note the page on the document and then press and hold the power button for about 10 seconds. This forces a power down. Power back up, select recently read and the book will be in the number 1 position. Generally it will start in the right place but depending on the lockup it may be back a few pages so I can verify the page number or do a goto to the page number.

If you occasionally power the unit down you may never see the problem at all.

Jinke does monitor this thread

Astak does NOT do its own firmware. The factory has 180 engineers that can do a lot better than we could ever do.

Frankly, in one year on the original Astak thread, this never was brought to my attention that I recollect. I have had the original FIRST EZ Reader Basic for a year and have repeatedly taken it on business trips to Taiwan and all over the USA and to Trade Shows and never once has it crashed. We had 8 eval units up at CES for 4 show days with thousands of people trying them... and not one crash. We expected some crashes with all the mishandling... but not a single problem. I am NOT saying you are mistaken at all... but my own experience has not shown any problem at all.

I do know that a new firmware upgrade (a major one) is due in a matter of several days.

I HAVE often mentioned on the origional thread and on the FAQ sheet... keep the device charged. IF you are having a problem 99% of the time it is simply a lack of charge. I recommend charging when the battery gauge reads a little less than 1/2. Yes, IF you try to eek out the last 1/4 charge you will see crashing.

What happened to me has happened with all versions of the Hanlin firmware. And it has happened with mobi, PDF, epub ebook formats. When I read I will at times read 2 to 3 hundred pages without leaving the ebook. And it seems that it will start to happen when I have read between 150 and 200 pages and when it starts to happen the reader will reboot and in a very few cases it has locked up and I have to do a reset. But in every case when I go back into what I was reading it goes back to a place that I have read sometimes more than an hour before. It is like its buffer get full and it cannot save or could be that it has corrupted the pointers that it keeps for the page placement for where I was at. I have had my Ezreader since early March and this has happened about once every couple of weeks and I know it is not that the battery is low. And I have tried the lbook and the bebook firmware as well as the jenke firmware.
This is not a huge problem it is just irritating.

Chuck

On the Bebook website the forums there talk about the crashes and reboots all of the time.
Everytime that it has crashed on me it had atleast 50 and most of the time close to 75% of its charge left.

Dear Chuck:

First, of course, please email to support@astak.com with any problem. We want to know.

Second, I am copying your entire post and sending it to Jinke. I appreciate that you say it is not a huge problem... but we do not want you to be irritated. We aim to please. I sell nothing I do not believe in and I fully believe in the reliability of the EZ Reader.

Jinke is the best and hardest working group of engineers I have run across. They really try and they build very reliable devices. You are out of the ordinary perhaps (that is meant complimentary). I normally read 75 pages and take a breather with music. But... yours should not have that problem. I just do not want new people thinking that the EZ Reader crashes relentlessly as it is one of the most stable and reliable devices I have ever used. Let me get Jinke working on this and let us try to assist you.

You do know that there is always a manual bookmark you can use. That is simple and always works. I am anal retentive I guess, but I bookmark manually every 30-50 pages or so. It is fast and easy and does not bother me any. It is just my habit.

I do not watch TV or do video games so reading is my life line and my work and my pleasure. I guess what I am saying is that I normally have to charge my Ezreader every other day now. I have gone in the past 2 weeks with out charging but I was reading less then. I am studing for a major Microsoft Certification and I have to read at least a 1000 pages of information a week just to be ready for the class in Nov.

And what I normally read are PDFs that run from 2 megs to 10 megs in size. And they are PDFs that I create from content I download from MS web site and format the page size using MSword than publish using a adobe publisher.
I was just lucky enough over the weekend to take time to read the latest Steve Martini Novel which very good by the way.

Please understand that I am not putting down the Ezreader I believe it is the great. I would get the PRO but I am waiting for a large screen EZreader. I hope later this year to be lucky enough to get one for I believe that it will make it by Christmas.

This recomendation is only for the first several uses?
