Thank you, thank you, thank you! The deletions and reinstalling instructions worked perfectly, and the eBook library is now functional again, just have to reload books from my backup folder. But, wow, Calibre is a better interface ...

One other thing I found that seems to cause the Library to hang when connecting the Reader -- at least in the case of my PRS-505 -- is having the Reader too full. Over time, I started to notice that those times when I've come close to maxing out the storage space on the Reader, the next time I connect, it hangs up (with the resulting loss of all collections and bookmarks when I finally get frustrated and pull the plug). But, when I left a little over 20Mb free (that seems to be the "sweet spot") when I disconnect and reconnect, there's no problem.

I'm not an expert on this, but I have a hunch that the Reader needs some internal "slack space" in order to handshake with the Library software -- maybe to rebuild the media.xml file or something like that. Anyone with a higher level of "Geek-fu" and a lot more detailed knowledge of the eReader's architecture want to take a stab at this?

Now, I haven't tried it with a memory card installed, so I'm not sure how that would work (maybe you have to leave even more free space on the Reader to allow for the card?).

Just my two cents. So far it seems to be working for me. Hope it helps!

Problems with Sony elibrary

After a few days of working fine, and being very happy with my reader I've got a problem. The symptom is that when I click on elibrary to run it, it doesn't open, it can be seen in Task Manager as loading to the extent of 41996K but using no CPU, it just sits there. I've deinstalled and reinstalled and still the same. Any thoughts on where I start to try and figure this one out. The Reader itself is working fine and I can still read books. But clearly can't load any more. Any thoughts on where to start to fix this? Tx

Wonder if anyone could advise me on a wee problem. I have a whole stack of tasty books in my ebook library but I can't transfer them to my 505 because, although the library lists all titles, there is no 'source view' showing as a left hand side sidebar when I open up the library itself. Means I can't operate it. Thanks for any help. Cheers. Neil

what version?

What version of the ebook library are you using? If you upgraded to version 3, you may want to go back to 2.5. There seems to be a number of problems reported in other threads regarding the version 3 of the Sony software. I just got my 505 and I couldn't get version 3 to even run on my Windows XP computer. Others seem to report other issues with the latest version as well.

Thanks, Hike. I uninstalled the updated version and re-installed the 2.5 from the CD that came with thed PRS 505. It's the 2.5 I'm having a problem with. Meanwhile, I'm using Calibre. Seems pretty neat. The only hitch with Calibre I've found is that books are listed in the library by only the first two letters of title ... mostly 'th'. Cheers. Neil

What the %^&* is going on with the ebook library software 3.0? Mine died last Thurs, no warning or anything. The icon just sat theire glaring at me and wouldn't open anything. (I read on my PC at work. They don't mind that, but look at me threateningly if I'm actually reading on my 505.)

Yesterday, I broke down and followed the instructions posted here to disembowel 3.0 and re-install 2.5. Nothing. Nada. Just sat their glaring at me with its baleful icon.

Today, just for kicks, I double-clicked the icon. It opened right up, just as though we had never said those horrible things to each other, although mostly it was me calling dirty names at it.

It opened as 3.0, which is unfortunate, because it won't let me place bookmarks, nor does it save the page where I left off reading. Can anyone else bookmark a page or anything?

PLEASE note that this will delete all books in your Library as well. Make sure you have a back-up if you need it! I hope this helps somebody. It worked for me (i.e., I did not ever have to re-format my reader).
