I'd suggest Alive, by Piers Paul Read, but you probably heard of it before. I read it when I was 13 and really impressionable, and I got so obsessed by that book that I've read it at least 20 times, and wrote all the characters date of birth in my agenda, and mourned on death anniversaries...yeah, I was a freak in high school, I know... |

Great story, great book!
![]() A few years ago Shackleton was adopted as a role-model by management consultants (back when companies had money to burn ![]() Kenneth Brannagh played Shackleton in a made-for-TV dramatisation modestly entitled "Shackleton - The Greatest Survival Story of All Time" - available on DVD, and better than it's title ![]() |

Actually, I just finished this anthology of Chekhov's short novels, which was wonderful to read. Entertaining, subtle stories that mostly haven't aged. I got them as a (belated) bday present, and finished about a story per day (along with my normal reading). While I didn't particularly care for the first story (The Steppe), the rest were marvellously entertaining, even if the latter few still took a few pages to really get going. How I wish Everyman and RH would digitalize their titles. Still, the HCs are pretty enough.

Two big exclamation points for Into Thin Air and In the Heart of the Sea. Both fantastic books.

Thanks for the recommendations! I'll definitely check them out.
Just read some stories from Just After Sunset by Stephen King. Great stuff! |

There's a collection on Feedbooks including 'The Steppe' but it's not brilliantly put together (Chapter headings instead of Story Headings). And I think 'The Kiss' is available on Gutenberg too. http://www.feedbooks.com/book/3810 |

And even if you don't like the Everyman's HCs (I try to get them whenever their translation - I mostly read Gogol/Dostoevsky/Chekhov/Stendhal atm - hasn't been superseded by a better one), the paperbacks of the same translations are usually sold through Vintage for about half the HC price; especially worthwhile being their translation of Notes from Underground.
