Exactly, I checked out a 505 and the 700 about a month ago at A SS store and it was pretty slow. There is definitely an improvment on the 600. I have one on order from SS. Should be ariving next week.

Academic papers (PDF)?

How well does it deal with PDFs? Could you try the PDF I've attached and take a picture of one of the pages with graphics (does it help if you use it in landscape mode)? How does it deal with the columns? Thanks a lot!

You can see the columns in my photos. It is actually very good at it. The PDF I have in those pictures has two columns and it reads perfectly in order when you use a bigger font. I will get a graphics pic up for you soon.

I'm eager to see how well weg's PDF article is displayed on the PRS-600, especially page 5 with all of the special characters. The two-column format is typical of journal articles.

Ok, here is what I have for that PDF:

Page 2 at Medium font with just plain text from first column:

Page 2 at Large font with text from first column. You can see that the "equation" or whatever it is is collapsed into strait line text at the top. Of course, if you go back down to Small, you will see the page as is in terms of the PDF and then you can zoom. I will show you that below.

This is the image at the top of page 3, column 2 in Large font:

Here is the same page on small. You can see that the reader replicates the page exactly.

This is the same page looking at page 3, column 2 with the zoom function:

FormerRodie, those are beautiful pictures. Thank you! I suspect the special characters elsewhere in the paper would not come through when the font is enlarged--certainly, Figure 3 was deconstructed with the enlarged font. For two column papers, one might have to work with only a small chunk at time with the zoom feature, but most of the papers that I would read are like the one here where you have to read slowly anyway. I had talked myself out of buying the PRS-600, but now I'm back to square one. Thank you, again.

You bet. I read archaeological PDF's and if they have maps, the maps just come up as a whole image rather nicely. So, if the thing put into the paper is like a jpg or something, it will stay whole.

I played with the PRS-600 at the Sony Style in Tysons Corner and Best Buy store in Sterling. They both are out of stock, with the latter expecting new stock this Tuesday or Wednesday. The screen is certainly not as superb as the 505, but it's still very good. PDF display is faster.

Darn. Must. Resist. For. Daily Edition.

Thanks for the photos and making me really want the 600!

hello formerroadie,

thanks for your very informative review and answers.

maybe you could explain two more things to me:

1. i own an (much overpriced) iliad. one of the nice things about it is the ability to zoom to a certain area by drawing a diagonal line with the stylus. can the prs 600 do this or something like this? or exactly how (by how many interface interactions) would you zoom to a certain area?

2. another nice things with the iliad is the ability to take (graphical) notes on pdfs, be it text-only or image-only or text-behind-image. and then (with additional software) have those notes integrated to a normal pdf on my pc. which i can print out etc. can the prs 600 (plus sony library or other software) do this, that is: a. take those notes (especially on scanned text-behind-image pdfs)? b. get those handnotes synced to "normal" pdfs? if so, what steps do you need to get to this?

i would be very grateful could you explain those points. thank you very much!

greetings,
c.

Hello Formerroadie

Thanks very much for your review and the photo's.
I noticed on the text that you displayed that you are interested in theology.
I was wondering if you have a Bible on your Sony 600 and if you do, what is your experience with searching a text. Also, how do you store it, as one book, or 66 books? Can you explain how the search function works?

Thanks and best regards,

Marie-Jeanette

Member sherman has uploaded the Holy Bible, King James Version, in ePub format with a multi-level table of contents, for easier lookup, on this thread. If it works on the PRS-505, it will work even easier with the touch screen function of the PRS-600.

1. Yes, you can. You just use the stylus or your finger and you can move the page around with your finger, if that makes sense. It's sort of like the "hand" icon in a computer PDF in Adobe.

2. Not that I'm aware of. Those sound like pretty advanced functions that I don't use nor would even know how to access . I have taken notes on highlighted text and then exported those annotations, but that's all I know how to do so far.
