Interestingly, Perdido Street Station is free at Amazon. Don't know whose promotion this is -- maybe Suvudu? If it is by Suvudu/Random House, then you can expect it to pop up at Sony & Scribd if not other online stores.

Me, I'm reading In the Company of Others by Julie Czerneda. I'm totally engaged and about 150 pages from the end. She's an amazing writer of science fiction and I'm sorry that I promised to mail this book to a friend in The Netherlands. I may have to buy a "keeper" copy as an eBook, as soon as it is available. Here's another case where the most recently published books are available, but the backlist is missing.

It's a Suvudu book, like you surmised.

It's from the publisher. I've noticed them doing similar things with other best-sellers -- make an older book free and hope it spurs sales for later works.

Back to topic: I'm reading MAGIC FOR BEGINNERS by Kelly Link.

In the interests on on-topic-ness...

I'm rereading Anne Rice's The Feast of All Saints. Her writing's florid and her characters must have lungs the size of elephants to get through some of their speeches... but I still find them an easy, engrossing read.

It's also available free from FEEDBOOKS, if anyone is interested (one of my top 5 reads of this year so far) http://www.feedbooks.com/book/3187 (it's missing 2 shorts from the paper edition)

I just finished 'How to Disappear Completely' from Feedbooks. I liked it. Nice find!

Also, I just finished two other Feedbooks books (they are PDF and take up a lot of space on the Sony compared to other formats, so I am trying to make space right now) by authors who have posted here. Normally, I always post feedback because I know I would want people to do that for me. But I thought one of the books was terrible, and the other, which I am just finishing, was fair to middling. I don't want to leave *bad* feedback...

Personally, I like to get feedback, even if it's negative. Although it's helpful if the reader can pinpoint what they didn't like and why, rather than simply, "I didn't like it, it sucked"

Well, I think I can say in general terms that both books just went a little fast for me. In one of them, one main character was pretty much standing around, another main character happens along, saves her from sudden danger and instantly declares his undying love for her, then she goes home with him (the whole time narrating to the reader how safe he makes her feel) and immediately has five pages of hot sex with him. I know it's a romance, but it was just a little too quick for me. Even the hard-core romance authors like Nora Roberts lead up to it just a little bit more---or at least, have the character muse aloud, to the reader, that this is happening awfully fast, isn't like them etc. I think that perhaps the two books read more like drafts to me, where with some workshopping, motivations could have been deepened and the storyline perhaps extended...

I'm exactly the opposite If someone doesn't like what I write, I really couldn't care the least bit. The reverse is true also, I'm not going to waste my time pointing out why I didn't like the work to an author (unless it's Dan Brown and then I'll put on boxing gloves and meet him in the ring). Life is just way too short to waste on bad vibes (man I sound like a hippy sometimes )
