Don't ask me! I'm one of those weird Americans whose never tried any of those strange things they deep fry at the street fairs and carnivals with the exception of a Corn Dog and I don't really like those, either.

Ocean City has a 3 mile long boardwalk and according to Shannon, you can get all kinds of things deep fried, Snickers bars, Twinkies, etc. I look at it as, why would you want to ruin a perfectly good Snickers by coating it in batter and frying it (I have never liked Twinkies so could care less what people do to them )?!

Deep frired snickers? Blasphemy! Not that I eat snickers that often, but I don't think a deep fried one is something I'd like. And twinkies never really apealed to me either.

One of my persistent desires that has ever been obstructed by the ludicrous notion of fashion in food is to have a restaurant prepare me that flaming feast. I have, to this day, never tried it.

Cheers,
Marc

Ah, you've definitly missed out on something then. You should make it a mission in life to have Glace au four at least once!

Glace au Four
Serves 5-6

For the cake:
75 g melted butter
250 ml (1 cup) rolled oats
125 ml (1/2 cup) sugar
1 egg
1 tsp baking powder
1 tbsp flour

Preheat the oven to 175°C. Mix all the ingredients, and bake in a small oven-proof dish for 20 minutes.

Let the cake layer cool completely and raise the oven to 275°C.

Make a meringue from 3 egg whites and 75 ml sugar (6 tbsp). Beat the egg whites until foaming, and add the sugar gradually. Keep beating until the meringue is stiff and glossy.

Cover your cake with ice cream - I use 2 500-ml packets. Cover the ice cream with good strawberry or raspberry preserves - homemade is of course ideal. Carefully pipe the meringue on top, making sure there are no holes. The ice cream and preserves must be completely sealed in.

Pop in the oven to brown for 3-4 minutes. This isn't rocket science people, it is, um, food science!

One of my favorite Mexican restaurants (which is now sadly no longer in business) used to have fried ice-cream. As it turns out, it wasn't actually fried. It was coated in a mixture of crushed cereal (corn flakes, I think), cinnamon and sugar and place on a deep fried flour tortilla that was also dusted with cinnamon and sugar. Finally the drizzled honey over the whole thing and topped it with whip cream and a cherry. It was delicious.

Making real fried ice cream is touchy. You have to have a really cold freezer and a really clean fryer. Most restaurants have gone the way of rolling a ball of ice cream in frosted flakes rahter than invest in an extra freezer and fryer.

I'm on a roll quoting you today, Marc!

Another favorite restaurant from the early days of our marriage and before we had kids (it was too expensive to go to after the little buggers came along) used to serve Bananas Foster Flambe! They would prepare it tableside and put on quite a show. We learned later that one of the waiters caught his sleeve on fire and the Fire Marshalls wouldn't allow them to serve it any longer.

Pfft. And they call themselves a "restaurant". Might as well just serve people Kraft Dinner and call it Pasta Alfredo.

Cheers,
Marc

Happy donut day everyone!

Managed to pick some up when going into work this morning, I remembered that our Shell gasstations has merged with 7-Eleven over here in Sweden
