Crazy weather here in North Texas. Typical high here this time of year is 38-42 C. High in the back yard today was 27 C. Partly cloudy, pretty cumulous puff clouds, low humidity, and a nice breeze. Was out much of the afternoon in the yard, working. Here summer, come back....chocolate!

Well, it only got to 21C here today, and 19C yesterday. Too bloody cold, and such a nasty thing to do on the first day of spring after we've been teased with 30+C days last week. It's not looking to improve much during the week either (23C, 24C, 23C, 25C).

Still, it's sunny, which is nice.

So Australians just round down to the nearest Month, September 1st for Autumn and March 1st for Spring with no actual connection to equinoctial points?

Yes, of course. Doesn't every non-pedant?

EDIT: Also, you got your seasons hemispherically mixed-up.

Is it Spring there already? My, how time just speeds on by if you're not paying attention. I thought it was still Summer in the underdown a mere month or so ago. (Actually, those temperatures sound rather pleasant to a Texas resident right about now.)

here we are experiencing a sudden vertiginous drop in temperature as well (and rain, today). yesterday was sunny and hot (around 30°) and summer all day long, today it's only about 18°, raining, and i've had to turn the light on at 2 in the afternoon because it's dark as night in here. and apparently it's going to be like this all week long. depressing, if you ask me. i suppose it's comforting (if unexpected...) to know that the entire world is getting about the same weather.

That would certainly make it easier to remember the dates if they were on the same date each year.

I would guess that summer here goes from about October to April. Summer (generally low 30's) here is sub-tropical, but far closer to the tropic than the temperate zone, and so it's hot-and-humid. Then there's our autumn and spring, mostly the same as each other (mid to high 20's, but humidity not so high), which are May and September respectively. Winter is June-to-August, but only about a month of it is truly "cold" (that is, around 20C days, and dry).

Or, to put the seasons into my perspective, late August to early June is potential "beachtime". The rest requires ugg boots, which are even less flattering when you're wearing shorts.

Quote:
(Actually, those temperatures sound rather pleasant to a Texas resident right about now.)
Looking forward to summer here requires being selective with your memory. It brings a lot of lazy days and hazy days and bodysurfing and pool-bathing, but one forgets that, outside of the water or a long, cool drink, it goes a long time with hot humidity and no respite from it (even overnight, when it's particularly noticeable).

Still...SUMMER! WOOHOO!

Cheers,
Marc

AUTUMN! WOOHOO!
Summer: Lazing around (that is, in) the pool, going for an afternoon bodysurf, lazing around (that is, in) the pool, tall icy glass of ZCD-with-curly-straw dripping coolly on your chest, visions, astral travel, euphoria, transcendence, nirvana (the karmic kind, not the noisy Smells-Like-Teen-Angst kind), wake to morning coffee, rinse, repeat.(*)

Cheers,
Marc
