I find the glare issue with the 700 over hyped. yes its there. but there has never been a time when I picked up my reader and could not read it.

I guess I agree that it's not going to be that bad where its impossible to read. However, I'm worried that the glare is bad enough that you are always aware of it and detracts from the reading experience. that will be annoying and most likely stop you from reading long hours...

for a device designed to be looked at for reading there shouldn't be any noticeable glare, I wouldn't buy one that did. I think Sony screwed up and shipped a subpar reader

I am sending PRS-700 back, no point in having it when I can wait for 4 more months to have 'Daily edition' in the same price range. Also do not find any firmware upgrade as per sony conference today, so this product is virtually killed.
I also don't understand why a co. will announce an improved product before the launch of a new product; this can potentially withhold purchase of many prospects. Last edited by addadutta; 08-25-2009 at 02:07 PM. Reason: new observations |

hmmm I have the 700 and I'm madly in love with it, no glare at all??? Weird how some people find it so bad they give up on it, yoikes! I read it inside and outside, good lighting and poor, and it's always super. I've tried my friend's Kindle - P.U! it stinks!

I'm with macthekitten -- I've had my 700 for almost a year now and have never ever been in a situation where I couldn't read it, and have never been in a situation where I have been overly aware of the glare to where it interfered with the pleasure of reading. I've read paper books printed on such bright white paper where reading in direct sunlight has created more problem than I've ever had on my 700.
Interestingly, though, what many people find to be completely easy to read, others will obsess over any imperfections they find. Which isn't a negative commentary on anybody, but merely an observation. For many people, the glare seems to be all they are aware of and it makes the reading experience miserable. I would never suggest that they should simply live with it -- I empathize with their concerns, and hope they find their ideal reader. On the other hand, though, it bothers me greatly when they offer comments which make the 700 sound like a crippled device. It's a great device which is a pleasure for many of us to read. |

i am also a happy prs700 user. the glare was irritating at first. but after a couple of weeks I started automatically holding it at angles to minimize the glare. it just takes patience. FYI if you have never used a reader before the whole act of reading on one will take patience at first. it is a very different experience.
that being said, I want to be able to write free hand. i want a prs600 and I want it yesterday. |

my most pleasurable reading in the sun happened on the darker screens of the 500 and the 700. the 500 was nearly impossible to read at night though. also the 505 screen really hurt my eyes when I tried to read on it for over an hour in the sun. but damn it's a nice screen. when I do get a new device, I'm gonna think about getting a film for the screen to make it darker, cause I love reading outside in the spring/fall when its nice of course I would take it off when inside. |

I found the 505's sharp text to be very harsh on the eyes for prolonged reading.. But I guess that's just me.
