prs 600/700 battery life affected by touchscreen?

Hi!

I'm looking to buy a prs 600 and was wondering how the touch screen affects the life of the battery. Maybe some 700 owners can help with this.

Does the fact that the reader has to always wait for input continuously drain the battery? Is the battery life still measured in pageturns or does it die by itself if just left open, consuming battery on that touch screen? If so, can the touchscreen be turned off?

A good question, whose answer I do not know. I find the side-light on the 700 does drain the battery relatively quickly compared to, say, the 505. That is the major battery drain for me, so I haven't noticed how fast the touchscreen effects it.

I would imagine not so much. The specs still quote battery life based on page turns (when the light is not used).

Do you generally leave the ebook on when not reading? Or turn it off?

I always imagined putting the ebook on the coffee table in the living room set to some picture, sort of like a photograph holder when I'm not using it

it puts itself to sleep after an hour.

the only noticeable drain to the 700 is the Sidelights, Allowing you to read from 5-8 hours with the side lights on.(I've never measured it. and ussually I only read with the light an hour max)

the touch screen doesn't drain the battery.

Hi!

If I use the annotation-function of the PRS-700 it drains my battery real fast. (After about 2 hours reading and note-taking it's down). Same when I use the side-lights.

If I'm just reading without the side-lights on and without note-taking there doesn't seem to be a big difference concerning battery-draining compared to the PRS-505.

Greetings,
Momo

The touchscreen itself doesn't drain the battery much, if any, it's the functions that the touchscreen provide that may drain the battery quicker.

Using the annotations, search, zoom functions etc. will drain the battery much faster. If the books are not pre-paginated by the eBook library, I would assume that the initial pagination would have some drain on the battery also.

It is the built-in light that quickly drains the battery on my PRS-700, but that need not worry you.

It does go to sleep after one hour - ASSUMING you have the "power management" selector set to ON. If not, then the unit doesn't shut off automatically. At least this is what I've read in the user's manual.

So no one knows if the reader can stay alive when kept open(unused) for, say 2 weeks?

Probably we need to wait until an official review about the new prs-600 came out.

I am also interested in how long the battery life is ... and is it possible to completely turn it OFF ... so, not only sleep mode.

You can turn it off completely by holding the power switch for three(?) seconds. Or use Shutdown option from Advanced Settings.

this is due to the "7500" page turns thing.

every time the screen is changed/refreshed, you are using the processor and it counts as a page turn obvously. you can do over 50 a minute.

if you work out the math, if you turn the page once a second, you reach 7500 in about 2 hours.

Even if it is completely off ... The battery will run-out after 2 weeks, correct?

Though never tried, I'm not sure. I have left my PRS 505 to "sleep" for over a week and my battery was about only one quarter depleted.

The way e-ink works, there should be no battery drained when nothing is happening with the screen. Therefore, turning the ereader off shouldn't be any different from just letting it on on a specific page.
The only battery drainer should be the touch screen which keeps looking for input.

This is my main concern with buying a touch screen enabled ereader. Can anyone who has both types of readers make a comparison?
