Sorry if this is in the wrong place, I've been searching for ages and can't find this problem. I have a Sony Reader 505, which had about 40 books on it. I tried to load more books (via Calibre, the Sony software has never worked for me) and was told it was full. Tried deleting books, still full! Then I formatted it ... all books gone .... started loading books again ... and, 19 books later, it's full again! All books are in .lrf format. Am I doing something wrong here? Getting sooo frustrated, I thought this thing was supposed to hold 160 books? Please can anyone help? :-(

Some books can be as big as 8 tot 10 MB, so this could explain why.. Alternative, spend $ 10 on a 1 gig SD card... |

Are you using Windows? Mac? How big are your book files?

If Windows (with the Reader connected) open my computer and right click on the reader (it should show up as a drive) and select properties. How much memory does it say it has? It's possible the memory is faulty and/or not reading correctly for some reason. If using a Mac you can use Finder to do something similar. |

Thanks for the response! It's true that some of my books are pretty big, but even so ... only 19? I had way more on it before, including War and Peace! However I've just ordered a memory card from Amazon, which should help. Thanks again! :-)

Unless your LRF files have a lot of images, there isn't any way that 19 books should be filling up your reader! I have over 170 books on mine, including three different versions of both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible. It does sound like there must be something wrong with your reader's memory (since you already tried reformatting).

How long have you had your reader? It may be worth a call to Sony customer support. Good luck-I hope you get it sorted out! dordale

imho, you have to look at the total size of your 19 files before calling Sony CS.

You should really do what AnemicOak suggests (post #3) |

No images in the files .... most were originally pdfs which I ran through PDFLRF, and I was surprised at the time how big the new lrf files were - some as big as 13MB. I have a lot of very long lrf ebooks, but I find that none are more than a megabyte or so. I really don't understand why these new files are so big, but at least it doesn't seem to be the Reader's fault (I did what Anemic Oak suggested, and yes, file sizes really do add up to the total ....) - so the question now is, why does PDFLRF result in such huge file sizes? (original pdf files were small) Thanks everyone for your thoughts, that was helpful!

You might take the PDFs and convert them to LRF using Calibre, and see if they are smaller.

So, this is wrong! The lrf files have images even if the sources have not. Pdflrf might be usefull for complex pdfs (technical books, comics, tables, ...) but if your source pdf files are basically text files, Calibre gives much better results (imho) and logical file sizes. So, I second what doreenjoy suggests. You will probably get much smaller file sizes (about 1 MB each). Glad that your device is not faulty! Last edited by Kostas; 08-28-2009 at 05:14 AM. |

Thank you SO much for that! Why didn't I think to use Calibre in the first place?? I will certainly do that now, and many thanks to all of you for sorting this out for me!

weeeelll, that's definitely the answer to some of them. Others, Calibre can't convert because they're drm'd .... and I haven't yet found a way to strip drm from pdf files. However it's been an interesting problem and I've learned a lot (mainly to avoid pdf files in future!) Thanks guys!
