Reading Dune gets me into the whole, "We will eventually understand what that bit of information they keep referring to means" mode. The Fifth Elephant is the only one of Pratchett's books that takes too long to get to the premise, in my experience.

It has taken me about a year to get just this far down the list, but there's no rush. These books are just as current today as they were when they were written.

I finished it during lunch, and I must say that it was a delight, as with all of the other ones that I've read so far. Gonna finish Nomesque's Dead(ish) when I take my afternoon break.

I know there as been plenty of talk over this, but I still don't know how I'll tackle them. It's making me a little nervous, I want to be sure I'm doing the good thing!

I was actually thinking about re-reading Dune soon, in English this time. Gotta love a challenge!

Finished The Color of Magic, read La Chatte, by Colette (again, thank you Patricia) and now I'm starting The Light Fantastic and I'm already all excited about it!

that's how I felt when reading Mieville's Perdido Street Station...except all those bits of information never were explained!

I'm reading Blackwater by Jeremy Scahill. It's about the Blackwater mercenaries in Iraq. Scary and depressing. I got it at the Sony store. I also bought Ayaan Hirsi Ali's The Caged Virgin.

I'm new here, but it seems like most people prefer fiction, whereas I mostly read nonfiction. Hanging out here could be good for me.

I read a lot of non-fiction, but don't like to talk about it all that much for fear of making eyes glaze over. Here's a recent sample;

Hey, you can't beat that Kindle price! ;-)

That does look a bit dry. However, my eyes wouldn't glaze if you spoke of it, although my brow would most likely furrow (I think Austrian Economics is the way to go).

There are some excellent non-fiction titles here on MR under the E-books forum. A few pages ago we were discussing the collection of essays, "Apollo Expeditions to the Moon".

I'm still reading Saul Bellow's Collected Stories, though with more steam in the boiler now. I've just finished the story, The Old System, which was remarkably pleasurable. I'm tempted to read it again, even before finishing the book (I won't, but I'm tempted). The more stories I read (and one can't help but grow enamoured of some of the characters - Sorella from The Bellarosa Collection is easy to admire, and desire to be "real"), the more I am enjoying Saul Bellow's writing. I'm glad I started with the short stories...it gives me confidence in heading towards the books he is better known for.

Cheers,
Marc

I love non-fiction, I've been reading a lot recently. Maybe we could have a specialized thread about it?

Saul Bellow... I think I've never read anything of him. Sounds like something I should try!

Finished Nomesque's Dead(ish) last night and really enjoyed it. The different fonts for different speakers rendered sort of bloopy on my 505, but it's all about the story and not the format anyway, right? It is very good and seems like she should submit it to FSF and see if it gets accepted for publication with them.

Started ReyBen's Living History on the ride in to work today. It has an action-packed intro and first chapter, which has really caught my imagination. I loved Orson Scott Card's Pastwatch, but as so many have said about that book, it was sort of slow. I have a feeling Living History will have that "what if we could go back in time and ...." feel but with more action and tighter writing. So far, it's terrific!

Finished Living History a moment ago. It is 78 pages and a thriller. The dinosaurs are a nice touch.

I just finished reading 4th Wish, a freebie fantasy novel from Fictionwise.

Hated it. That's 2 hours of my life I'll never get back.
