Or The Saragossa Manuscript. It's based on The Manuscript Found in Saragossa by Count Potocki. It's famous for its stories within stories within stories. I think at one point in the film you're a least 5 stories deep.

It's a very funny movie. Academy award winning director, multiple Acadamy award winners starring in this movie. Very poor screen reviews, but it's one of my favourites.

A man running from a mysterious past is trapped in a small desert town after his car breaks down. Everybody in this town seems to have totally lost their mind and Bobby (Sean Penn) can't wait to leave. But there is a problem: Bobby doesn't have the money to get his car fixed. So when an aging man (Nolte) offers him money to kill his young wife (Lopez), Bobby seriously thinks about it. However the gorgeous young woman casts some kind of spell on him and she asks him to get rid of her husband. Thornplay plays the mechanic, Phoenix plays the town bully.
