Thank you for the effort you expend in keeping the list updated. I ran across this one that I thought was well written (I bought after just a few pages), but it won't be a dollar more than maybe the weekend.

From my post on the deals page:

The Legend of Oescienne - The Finding, by Jenna Elizabeth Johnson, is on sale today for $1.00. This is the first book in a fantasy series aimed at adolescent and young adult readers (or those who enjoy young adult fiction). This book was first released at $10 (which I personally think was much too high) and there is no guarantee it won't return to that level after the sale (but I think it'll be closer to $4 or $5), so grab a sample and, if you enjoy it, be sure not to miss this sale price. The sale has been advertised as a 24 hour one, although it may last a bit longer than that, I would not count on it. I read thru just a few pages and went ahead and bought it. The only problem I saw was an occasional missed space between words (I assume an artifact of the Kindle DTP system conversion) and it was both interesting and well written

Book Description
When the dragon Jaax receives word that a human infant has been found in the province of Oescienne, he doesn’t dare believe it. Humans have been extinct for centuries, trapped by a terrible curse and left to live out their existence in the form of dragons. Despite his doubts, however, Jaax assumes responsibility for the baby girl only to discover that what he has been seeking for so many years has finally been found . . .

Jahrra knows all about the legends and sagas of Oescienne, but never in her wildest dreams would she believe that she played a part in one of them. She’s far too busy dodging the bullies at school and seeking out new adventures with her friends to worry about what secrets her dragon mentor might be keeping from her, or that her every move is being watched by something living in the forest surrounding her home.
But the secrets run deep, and as Jahrra fights to earn her place in this extraordinary world, she will begin to unravel the truth of it all: that she isn’t as safe as she thought she was, that danger lurks around every corner, and that her role in this unfurling tale is far more significant than she could possibly imagine.

I don't know how effective dropping the price of a book for one day only, and that day being a weekend is.

Free book:
Dark Blue: Color Me Lonely, by Melody Carlson, is the first in the TrueColors Series (there are currently eleven on Kindle), which is a religiously themed series aimed at teens/young adults.

Book Description
When Jordan starts to make new, more popular friends, Kara feels totally burned by her former best friend's icy rejection. These dark blue days are almost more than she can take, until she makes a life-changing discovery. To get there, however, Kara must make some major choices about who and what she's going to believe in, and if she'll ever trust anybody--including God--ever again.

In her new TrueColors series, best-selling author Melody Carlson takes young readers into edgy, poignant topics that students deal with on a daily basis--issues such as drug abuse, sexuality, body image, and more. Includes discussion questions.

Samhain Publishing continues their summer freebie reading selections with Yorkshire, by Lynne Connolly. This is volume one of her Richard and Rose series. Most of Connolly's books are on the erotica side of romance, so I would not be surprised if this one is as well (although the book's description and warning are on the tame side).

Book Description

Rose Golightly is a country girl who thinks her life will continue on its comfortable course, but a series of events changes that for good. On a visit to the ancestral estate of Hareton Abbey, Richard Kerre, Lord Strang, enters her life. A leader of society, a man known for extravagance in dress and life, Richard is her fate. And she is his.

Richard is to marry a rich, frigid woman in a few weeks, and has deliberately closed his heart to love. Then a coach accident throws his wounded body into Rose's arms.

With one kiss, Richard and Rose discover in each other the passion they thought they'd never find.

But the accident that brought them together was an act of sabotage. Somewhere, in the rotting hulk of a once beautiful stately home, a murderer is hiding.

Richard and Rose set out to solve the mystery, and find the layers of scandal go deeper than simply determining who is guilty. And that doing the right thing could separate them forever.

Warning: This series is addictive. Passion and murder are a potent mix.

Continuing a trend in the business book section on Kindle, there are two new extended samples available for free this morning. Both include the intro and all of chapter one, but unlike some of the previous free samples, the main books are not being sold a chapter at a time. Instead, they hope to entice you to purchase the entire book and I suspect have decided that the publicity of being found on a search of free books is of more benefit than simply setting the sample size of their books to include the same information.

The first is a motivational book, which promises to help you achieve your dreams and then enjoy that success. I can already guess step one: define the dream. It seems that this is a lot easier with the professional athletes he usually works with (win the SuperBowl; secondary objective: don't get hurt) than perhaps with the average person pursuing a non-sports career, but books such as these sell well (although I suspect it's more for the behind the scenes info on sports figures, than for the actual success in implementing the book's ideas into the reader's own lives).

From the second author, we are promised to be told all we need to know about trading options on the stock market. I strongly suspect that chapter one only includes enough information to make such trading dangerous to your portfolio or only has a lot of promises of the riches that could come your way, without the real "secrets" of the full book.

Touchdown! (Intro & Chapter 1): Growing Up, by Kevin Elko.

Option Trading Body of Knowledge (Introduction & Chapter 1), The: Market Overview, by Michael C. Thomsett

Raising Jake by Charlie Carillo

Book Description
Sammy Sullivan is working his way down the ladder of success. Divorced and pushing fifty, his relationships have the longevity of a fruit fly. But how many men can get themselves fired and have their only son expelled from prep school all in one day? Now, after almost eighteen years, he and Jake may finally get to know each other. (That's if his ex-wife--the super-achiever Sammy can only dream of being--doesn't find out.) Jake knows virtually nothing about his roots. So, Sammy shows him the old neighborhood in the far reaches of Queens. But it's been thirty years. The older woman Sammy lost his virginity to now uses a walker to get around. Most of his hangouts are long gone. It's dreary, born-to-lose stuff. But Jake is on a mission. Wise beyond his (and his dad's) years, he doesn't want his father to miss out the second time around on the good things he blew the first time. And they've got a whole weekend together--a journey where Sammy will confront his, dysfunctional childhood and Jake will face a past he never knew he had.

This isn't your typical father-son story--one is still growing up. The other is his son.

I'm not sure if these qualify, but Laura Lippman (a mainstream author) has several short stories available for $0.99 each

I don't know if I should add those since a single book of all of those short stories are avaliable for $6.39

Joe Hill (Stephen King's son) has the same situation. You can either buy his book of short stories for $8.39 or you can buy the short stories individually for $0.99 each.

Yeah, I wasn't sure if I should mave mentioned them or not, and on reflection I probably wouldn't add them to your list. It's a smart way for authors that write short stories to sell their work though.

It's no big deal. I'd much rather have people mention stuff that doesn't work instead of people sitting on stuff that could be valid.

I don't mind adding short stories to the list but I try to avoid ones that are available in a collection book.

It is a cool idea though. I'd much rather spend $0.99 on something to sample the author's writing instead of chance $6-8 on a full collection.
