A MINI Cooper has a surprising amount of room in the back, when the seats are down. Dog might not quite be able to stand up, but certainly has room to lay. My first MINI was only $19K second hand (half a year old).

RWood mentioned the Element. They actually have a dog edition! It has some extra goodies for dog owners.

if you want a real Jeep, then you're pretty much limited to the Grand Cherokee, Cherokke, or Wrangler. The Patriot et al are Chrysler products with braning badges stuck to them. I have a Wrangler Unlimited, which i love. Four doors. Moose llike accommodations in the back seat. Real 4WD. You can get it in standard. Mileage doesn't suck. Since you Rescue Dog it, I would suggest the Rubicon style, since it's trail rated from the git go.

Is the Patriot the really big one? If so, not so much. It comes Trail Rated in all its packages.

this is a nice review, and the price is GREAT!

The 2009 Jeep Patriot ranks 21 out of 25 Affordable Compact SUVs. This ranking is based on our analysis of 45 published reviews and test drives of the Jeep Patriot, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

The Patriot is most appealing for its affordability and good off-road capabilities. However, it still can't match the quality interiors and backseat comfort of rivals -- although an interior redesign for 2009 should help matters.

The Patriot is a good value since it functions as both a daily driver and competent off-road SUV. Plus, auto writers love its boxy styling, which is reminiscent of the retired Jeep Cherokee. "Compared to the mechanically similar Jeep Compass, Patriot feels more like an authentic Jeep," says Consumer Guide. "Compass and Patriot lack the on-road polish and cabin refinement of other vehicles in this class, but Patriot compensates somewhat with impressive available off-road capability."

Okay, that's the Junior Jeep that actually is the replacement of the Cherokee. (Which is not the same as the Grand Cherokee)... You gotta watch that one. If there isn't a "Trail Rated" badge, then you're getting a soccersuv and would not be pleased with the performance in the areas you're likely to be doing rescues in...

no, It's got high off road ratings

here's a review by someone who apparently loves to hate to love them or something, it's just down your ally... he's very.... conflicted

Jeep lovers are a strange lot. We want rugged enough to drop out of a plane and then whine because it's spartan, then turn around and revel in the idea that you can clean up with a garden hose, then bitch about the low power engine, then delight in the grind them up gearing. And so on...

The Compass is one that you need to stay away from. The Liberty is really a soccersuv. But the Patriot is really a Jeep. With all the attendant love/hate baggage.
