NO, NO, NO. Buying a Daily Reader won't give you instant access to all these libraries. It will just provide a wireless interface to your LOCAL library for borrowing. The 505, 600, 700, 300 can already borrow books from your LOCAL library site. You just have to access libraries thru your web browser and load books using ADE. Looks like the new Sony software will simplify the e-library access as part of the Library software.

In any case, you STILL NEED A LOCAL LIBRARY CARD to borrow e-books from ANY Sony Reader. These libraries have limited copies of e-books available, and are funded by LOCAL taxes. Nobody is getting nationwide free access to a ton of online libraries. Just easier access to your LOCAL libraries.

Sadly I'm coming more and more to support this view - though the initial reports did seem to imply that Sony was providing NYPL access to Reader owners through their software. However that could just be sloppy reporting.

That's still great for me! I'm the library queen since I have access to a few libraries including NYPL and I'm not paying a thing for them. I have cousins all over the states and they are avid readers. They check out library books all the time. I hipped them to the ebook craze and they in turn share their library card number and pin with me! NYPL is not even in my top 3 of favorites, they add new books very slowly, Brooklyn and Denver are the best in adding books less then 2 weeks after release, with NYPL you could wait for at 60 days sometimes before they add popular fictions!

It is sad, many small town libraries may not ever have ebooks. Maybe someday there will be an online nationwide library

Brooklyn library is good? I wonder if my NYPL card works there too.

Also wondering if this "sharing" of library privileges is inappropriate discussion here--I'm sure it is contrary to the policies in the user agreements, to put it nicely.

Drat! Lots of searching and I find no info about epubs (except that they'll display them), a firmware update for the 505, or new content (except they're officially not saying anything about content deals they're making). Drat!

I think we'll get more info when the download links for the new version of the eBook library go live.

Is a firmware update needed for the 505? It already displays ePub, right? The library access (for any non-wireless Reader) would be handled by the SOny Library software--basically, just a direct access to the library content, as opposed to accessing through a website and loading borrowed e-books using ADE (as is required now).

Now, if they had a firmware upgrade to allow the 500 to display ePubs and access library content, *that* would be cool!

I see nothing wrong with discussing this. I've check out paper books for family and vice versa in my lifetime. Sometimes you can live in the same city but not allowed to check out a library book because that's not your county. There were many times that we were giving reading assignment in our school district and the library book was not available in Dade County (Miami, FL) because we were competing for the same book and I'd ask these same cousins to check out the book from a Broward County library (Fort Lauderdale, FL) and I'm usually present when it's being done and the library does not have a problem with it. It's not like there's not a limit on how many books you can check out; it's still 10 to 14 no matter how many people sharing an account.
