I'm really worried about the quality of the screen with this, though. If the touchscreen is anything like the touch edition, or the 700, I am going to have a hard time upgrading.

Contrast is bad. Sony Fail. Again.

Look at the comparisons of contrast ratios in this official press shot below (look at the black toolbar at the bottom of the screen). The 300 is clearly at the level of the 505. And then it's just down hill from there. The 600 is clearly inferior as we already knew. And the new "Daily" is just aweful. Damn it, Sony! This isn't rocket science! Didn't you do ANY research in to why your 700 failed!?

Is the $300 price a reality ? How's that different from the 600's price ? And why ?

However I like that Sony seems to put some money and work into the ereader market.
I have to agree, one more screen format doesn't help at all. If you put in landscape and display two "pages", what are those pages, 4" ?
Furthermore, this is one big reader that doesn't help with PDF viewing at all. And it puts us farther away from a decently priced international reader for technical books and the such, since it will be sometime till Sony thinks of new models now.

Why couldn't Sony get a similar contrast out of the Reader Touch? It just doesn't make sense for Sony to leave that model flapping in the wind with that crummy display, when they seem to be able to pull of touch screen integration successfully in the new Daily Edition.

It looks to be another leg up in the novel reading department, even with the bigger screen, the new aspect ratio is really not making it possible for textbook reading. Looks like for the time being that market is still firmly with the Kindle DX.

Why, oh why are they obsessed with touch screens? Isn't the point of an e-ink device supposed to be that it reads just like a book? Well, do Sony engineers read books with a plastic/glass cover on them?

That doesn't seem to be the case, from jdclucidly's post and pic just up ahead. They screwed it even worse with contrast on the Daily Edition (what's the model number, by the way ? 900 ?)

Actually, I appreciate a touch-screen, when well integrated. It's what I miss the most on my 505 (more than a dictionary). I believe Sony engineers, and most people, like to make annotations in paper books, hence the need for touch

Looks like I was wrong. Contrast on the new reader looked good stand alone, but given the side by side contrast comparison, it looks like Sony has learnt absolutely nothing from the failure of the PRS-700.

I guess I'll just hang on to my 505.

Because customers want touch screens. Me, for example.

Any word of this new one being available in Canada? Still wondering why they pulled the 300/600s off the shelves if it isnt.

True! Although I do concede that annotations would be nice. If only they could make a touch screen that looked good.

yes...and if the 505 is given the same support for the public library feature I have no reason to give up my 505
