I was reading this blog related to the Canadian Copyright consultations and it's relevant to this discussion. The idea of voiding ownership of ebooks is a power play by the distributors to ensure they get a piece of the pie. It's bad for the consumer and as he argues it's bad for the content producer as well.

He makes very good points indeed, especially in this Part II you linked. I'll be waiting for Part III now.

But here's something: as posted in this very thread, distributors such as Apple didn't seem as fearful of DRM as the big publishing houses - and we can see Sony in a similar vein. The biggest proponents of DRM are really the publishers, as far as I can tell. I'd take publishers are the content producers, and so would be interested in the content's free flow, but as for the big ones are they really distributors too ?

And I recommend anyone who hasn't to check out the article pointed out in the thread Ars article on Flat World Knowledge

I think it answers for what progressive business models should really look like in the future of ebook business. I'm in love with the concept right now, so I'll just stop talking. But this: flashcards ?! That's awesome, baby!
