Rollers are an important element in cricket - but they tend not to be steam powered these days.

If you want to see blood - YouTube has a collection of clips (e.g. Daniel Flynn's painful encounter with a ball - that thing is hard!!)

Why are they crushing these poor insects with steamrollers and then burning their small, smashed bodies into ashes?

Yes, crickets can be noisy at night and if you're very tired it could possibly push you to frustration. I still have to say this is a bit extreme.

actually there is a tribe on one of the islands around New Guinea (I think... this is from a college reading sometime last century) that replaced ritual headhunting with cricket. the games are very formalized and take 3 to 4 days. many things exchange hands based on this game.
