I agree with this too. Not everyone can have a Kindle, and I feel they need to know that up front. Nothing irritates me more than misleading advertising. And (to me), it's too complicated to covert formats JUST so I can shop on Amazon. I have been able ot find every book I've needed so far either on the Sony Website, BooksOnBoard, and my library. |

It seems like DRM'd eReader is listed as a supported format under the Astak Mentor. Is that not e-ink, I guess? Either way, I did not know a full-sized non-PDA reader could handle this format...
*shrug* When I buy it now, which is rarely and only at 100% rebate, I strip the DRM anyway so I can read it on my Sony. A tiny handful of my books have not turned out great, but the rest have been just fine. It is a bother though, and I do tend to buy much, much more multiformat ones now where I don't need to worry about this. |

The same Astak unit will read DRM'd PDF and ePUB from ADE so all three formats are fully covered. Dale |

I think for this to really work, the criteria would have to be tiered and ranked in some way. After all, it's not just about what content you read (and most of us would pick from more than one category anyway). Also, when you combine criteria, you may get conflicting answers. As people have pointed out, where you live is a big factor. If you combine that with the criterion of not wanting to do any converting, it's a game changer. If you would prefer not to, but you're willing to do it if you have to, that could give you a different set of options. You'll covert but won't strip DRM? Different answers. Same applies to library books. You can read all of them on any device if you're willing to strip DRM and/or do some conversion. We also haven't addressed things like features: dictionary support, search, user-loadable fonts, language support, content organization, annotation. These are things that matter not at all to some but are deal-breakers for others. For most, they rank somewhere in the middle. If these questions weren't so complex, this forum would be a lot shorter.

Maybe something could be assembled similar to this decision-making "grid" for selecting cell phones: http://3lib.ukonline.co.uk/grid.htm

Could anyone help answer this one? I realize of course there are lots of converters out there but that seems like a bit of a headache to me. |

A few other considerations that I would have if I was buying another ereader:
Which one is the cheapest/best value? i.e. e-ink technology with long battery life, no lcd. I know that this is subjective... Which ereader should I buy if I want to carry it around in my pocket? Which ereader should I buy if I am rough with my electronic gadgets? (i.e. throw in my backpack and slog through town, tossing my backpack around quite a bit) |

I have converted comics to read on my Sony 505 and I don't like reading them on this platform. I have a comic book reader on my PSP and that is actually almost ideal. A bigger screen would be nice but it works well.

sorry, but I'm lost...
![]() Hi! I'm sorry I'm lost and tired of wandering the friggin' WWW so if anyone could help me or direct me to the right spot (please include the instructions on how to get there ![]() okay so here's my question: I'm a Canadian and I want a e-reader. Nothing too intense or fancy just something I can read books on, load my class notes and that kind of stuff. I'm also a student with unlimited needs and limited ressources... Thank you and sorry again if I'm in the wrong place! ![]() |

I would be interested to see if there is a consensus here on bells and whistles that are not worth the money. That is to say, "I paid extra for this bell, and it turns out I never use it, and I wish now that I had purchased a less expensive unit without it."

But, as a student... I would say a Netbook would probably be a better all around student device for reading books, taking notes, studying, etc. BOb |

Cybook Opus or Sony Prs-300 ????
Now that the Sony PRS-300 is out, who will be the first to do a comparison between the 2 readers ????
As far as I can see, both have a 5" screen, and are geared towards ePub. From the pictures on these forums, the Opus seems a little bit less "Square" than the sony and it seems to have more rounded corners. As far as I can read, the Sony does not have a media card slot and the Opus has one... Anything else ????? Does the Sony fits in a pocket ??? Regards, Georges |
