although actually, i'm currently listening to whatever noises my neighbors are making (mainly the shums) since i'm feeling rather calm and in the mood for quiet right now. and the shums, for once, are not being *excessively* noisy. they must be ill.

Have you tried playing those high pitched noises only teens are supposed to be able to hear? Although I suspect they might upset your cats more than the SHUMS

actually, bizarrely enough, *i* can hear those noises too although i shouldn't (well... maybe not "hear" exactly, it's more like a very odd sensation which is not exactly noise and it's quite uncomfortable, sort of like a ringing in my ears, or a feeling of pressure, or... well, it's hard to describe. it's like there is something i feel i *should* be hearing, but i can't quite hear it, so my ears get very confused). so the answer is no. but i might try it one of these days, i could put it on the window sill outside the window and see what happens...

That makes perfect sense (no, seriously, it does - I'm aware of there being a noise just beyond my hearing range. And fans at certain speeds drive me nuts - it's like I can just hear a radio station at the edge of hearing - not enough to actually hear specific words and music, but the fact there is words and music. Annoyingly, given I work in IT, the massed server fans in the comms room are the worst!)

i'm glad i'm not alone. thinking more about it it's rather like a vibration which i can feel, it's almost itchy in my ears. so i can easily imagine that fan noise would cause the same sensation. it's very unfortunate for you, given your job ! the radio you can't quite hear is actually a good description ; you know there is *something* so your ears try to hear it, but you can't quite... it's really annoying.
