Well, in that case I really think that if it has to be cut down, the people it's affecting should pay for it (or the stupid developers who built houses that close to mature trees without thinking).

And I agree, it would be a shame to cut it down.

Some cities will require a permit to cut a tree down.

Chestnut is not really a usable wood.
And I would really shop around for a better price, that company is abusive.
I don't have to cut it down, but it at least needs to be trimmed quite severely, and the gardener didn't think it would be a sound option in the long run aesthetically or economically.

About the price: Workmen are really expensive here. Expect to pay around 75-90 $ per hour.

Very!

You have to take into account, that our taxes are at 55% (63% of the last earned dollar, if you earn a lot) plus a VAT on consumer goods at 25%.

So the minimum wage is actually around 18$... and you can hardly make a living of that.

But it is a problem: Instead of working overtime doing more operations, it's more profitable for the doctor to go home and work on his veranda or whatever (instead of hiring a professional).

I myself have suddenly learned to put up drywalls etc. after I have bought my own house. And I am definitely not a handyman.

It is a bit of a national sport, however, to get the work done without receipt. But I don't have the stomach for being a part of tax evasion.

I'm just trying to say that everything is expensive here, so it's only natural that the wages are higher.

If we are talking buying power, I actually think the Americans and maybe also you Canadians are a bit ahead of us.

I suppose the cheapest car from new in your country doesn't cost 18.000 US $

We have A LOT of added taxes on stuff deemed unhealthy to use in large quantities. A litre (not a gallon) of gasoline is about 1.8 $. for example.

Another rant: God and I have had a long lasting battle: everytime I am out in the open he lets the rain pour. It has become a test of wills. It became a test of egoes.

After I got a car I'd thought I'd won.

But then the other day, I had to take the bike to work. The skies were grey, raindrops were waiting to fall. But I got to work just in time before the skies opened up. I rose my fist, shaking it knowingly at the heavens: "I got you this time" I thought.

Three hours later they called from my daycare-center that my son was ill and I had to fetch him. At that very minute it started raining cats and dogs, and I had no option other than to accept it and get on my bike to fetch my kid.

I was simply outsmarted by God.

But I swear I won't let him win another round.
