The Book vs the Kindle

An amusing series of videos from the indie 'brick and mortar' San Francisco bookseller Green Apple Books (if you know them, give them a shout out).

Here's the first video (the rest can be found on the link below)

Sainsburys head office still uses CRTs... (I work directly opposite them, and we spend some of our meetings being nosy instead of actually having a meeting...)

Gee... I stopped half way through the second one. Talk about biased propaganda. Well, what do you expect from a paper book seller?

Yea, I have sold some books to a used book store and it would a take a hug number of books to get to $80. And even then it was store credit, not cash.

Yes, totally... at least they sort of got the rest of that right... places that buy books don't want most of what you bring in (the took about 1/3 of what she brought in which is ALOT)... so, what do you do with those books? Trash them, give them away? Store them?

donate them to the library which uses them to have a sale and buy books people want.

$80 for used books is insane. You just don't get that amount, ever.

What I dislike is the either/or stance they're taking. I read both pbooks and ebooks, so all they're doing is turning me off with that kind of stance.

lol I thought they would have been considered a health risk by now, given all the radiation that poors out the front.

One benefit of buying real books is that you have a far greater chance of meeting cute smart girls/guys at book shops. Buying online you never get to experience dusty old bookshops in that tactile way.

in the near future, almost everybody i guess would opt for online shopping. to that, kindle would be of great advantage.

I don't know. I got over $50 once. I was moving and I went through my entire library, culling. You'd be surprised what you get when you bring in five boxes of books at once...

Mind you, there *were* a lot of books they didn't want. I think I ended up giving them to Goodwill (a local thrift store).

I'm a book collector, and I've sold books for hundreds of dollars (many, many hundreds of dollars), both as a prospector for books - I know Literature and Science Fiction values extremely well, and have also worked at bookstores for about 23 years of my life - and as a personal collector for my own collection. I regularly placed books on ebay (before I moved to Peru), and on one placing reached almost $2,000 for a sale - books I bought AT A BOOKSTORE for only $85.

On the video: Dear Holy Moley: Hahahaha - To be in my early 20s again, full of pi** and vinegar! Hahahaha - those young kids (I feel) really do understand the future of reading. This is a satirical piece and commentary on How We Now Read Or Will Be Reading In The Future.

Thanks for making this available.

Don

Now, where DID I put the chainsaw? I've got business below this line to attend to.

What's wrong with a CRT monitor? I'm not getting rid of mine any time soon...

About the video: it does touch those points that a lot of ebook readers have been complaining about, can you resell your book? can you lend it out? etc...
