PB I think you have hit the nail etc. I was using a PC when I first bought my reader. I've only had my iMac and Macbook for 6 months.

Is it feasible to reformat the Sony but keep the books on Calibre on the iMac? I presume they would also disappear from the SD card.

Is there an idiot's guide to reformatting?

Finally; it is ADE which is not operating properly, as you say I'm waiting for the update for Macs later this month. Therefore is a reformat necessary, or should I just wait and see?

No wonder I get migraines.

Yes. But of course, if you can't mount the reader onto your Mac, there is no way to copy what is on it to your Mac's hard drive. The reformat will only reformat the internal memory. You will have to format the SD card with your Mac's disk utility. And formatting is always destructive. i hope you have coppies of all your books somewhere else. Or, if you have access to a windows machine some where you can copy them to that.

The formatting directions are in the 505 user manual. It is on page 65. You can get the user manual here http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/mod....pl?mdl=PRS505 if you don't have it handy.

Actually, ADE is working fine. It just doesn't know how to talk to the 505 yet. But, I am afraid even after you get the Mac version of the Sony software you are going to have to reformat that device. A Mac just won't mount an NTFS volume.

Many thanks for the prompt reply PB. The murk is starting to clear. Now I know what I have to do; I just need some clear time between the Grandson and his Grandma.

Luckily I do have a Dell laptop to save everything to. However, and this is right off topic, I feel like I'm stepping back in time when using Windows.

I think there are cunning ways to get a Mac to read/write NTFS using utilities like e.g. macfuse and NTFS-3G. They might be worth looking into if reverting to the lowest common denominator of FAT32 does not appeal.

B0ned0me beat me to it but, yes, Macfuse and NTFS-3G will enable the mac to read and write to those drives.

Yes, I knew these were available... and really meant to say Mac won't mount NTFS volume "out of the box".

I actually have MacFUSE installed. VMWare fusion actually installed it. They use it to be able to access the NTFS volume on the virtual machine from Mac finder.

That said, I think reformatting the device and SD card is the better way to do.

Even if you get your Mac to read NTFS, Reader won't know how to handle it anyway.

My reader works great with one of my computers but not the other. So I don't think that reformatting the reader will help?

I have never had it plugged into a Windows machine, it came out of the box like this. I don't have anything special installed on my laptop that would make it work with the reader.

I tried reformatting the reader as suggested and I didn't help.
If I was to try and reformat through Disk Utility it would wipe the reader completely, all of the sony software would be gone and I would have a way to get it back.

I am thinking now that it is a problem with my computer, not the reader.
When I first posted the question it was before I had tried my reader with my laptop.

I just tried reformatting my reader, as per Sony's online "How to" instructions. The new format is showing as MS-DOS (FAT16).

Calibre is recognising the book and the card, and is operating normally.

I think I'm going to have to wait until Sony get their act together and push the new ADE to us. Many thanks for all the useful input, which has clarified a few things for me about the way the systems operate.
