You say I am a fool - well I believe in freedom of speech and I respect your right to say that.
On the other hand, I think there is an important issue of freedom of speech and censorship here.
This is a privately owned forum, not a democracy. You have to follow the rules or leave.

OK, I didn't understand.
I thought it was a democracy - my error.
If it is privately owned, would you be good enough to explain who owns it?
I wrongly thought it was like any other community bulletin board and that it was owned by everyone.
Could you give the link to "the rules" that I have to follow?
I have not been able to find them on the site.
Thanks very much for letting me post on your private site.
I am sorry to be so troublesome - that comes from being Australian where we live and work in a free and democratic society.
I recommend it.
Perhaps you should just ban me for asking too many questions.

OK
Please delete my membership.
There is too much censorship, abuse and not enough discussion.
Thanks.

And you are incorrect about Orwell, actually. His works are in the public domain in your own country as well as in Canada, where the Mobile Read servers are located.

Feel free to disagree.
This is a private forum (not hosted in America or Australia) and what you are talking about is illegal. If the owner (who is paying the bills) doesn't want people talking about piracy, try actually respecting the rules instead of trying to be some badass rebel hiding being free speech.

Everybody here already knows you can download books illegally and that there are much easier ways then you posted.

MobileRead is a privately-owned community. The siteowner is Alexander Turcic.
You can find out more by clicking the FAQ on the blue bar at the bottom of this page, and going to "About Us." Or click here:
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/faq...q#faq_about_us

There is more information about our history and our policies on our wiki. Here's a link:
https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/MobileRead

Toward the bottom of the link we specifically rule out hosting or linking to copyright violations:

Quote:
MobileRead does not condone or support the use of this web site to break the law. This means that, to the extent possible, we will not allow posting of instructions showing someone how to break the law or requests for such instructions.

In particular items that break copyright law or DRM cannot be supported. eBooks posted to this site must be legally posted using applicable law and permissions.

Laws certainly vary between countries and something may be perfectly lawful in one country while being unlawful in another. MobileRead moderators are not legal lawyers or policemen so it is up to the individual to determine if they can download an eBook or make use of forum or wiki content. In general items in this site will conform to the laws of the hosting country, Canada, however it is recognized that forum members live all over the world. Note that a second server in the USA is available for eBooks that are in the public domain for USA but not in Canada.

In some cases a particular piece of software being discussed may serve multiple uses which might include unlawful use. It is not MobileRead's practice to assume that such software will be used unlawfully if it has a lawful use. Again the individual user will need to know the law where they live.

This should not be construed to limit discussion on these topics, although MobileRead reserves the right to limit discussion that is outside the realm of good taste or uses foul or hateful language.
Since you wish your membership to be ended, Bill the Smith, I will do so. But I'm sorry that you feel the need to go. All we ask is that people behave fairly politely and don't break copyright laws. Otherwise almost anything goes.

What's the important issue? I'm not seeing it.

Is saying "steal Bill the Smith's car, parked on street X, the key is in the ignition" also an example of protected free speech?

Don't for a second think Bill wont be back under another nick.

The whole "delete my membership because I believe in democracy and free speech" crock is just attention seeking theatrics.

Cheers,
