I think they'll use the press event to officially launch the 300 and 600, and also to unveil the other reader that they have managed to keep under wraps. Keep in mind that we do know they are working on a larger WiFi enabled device that can be used for newspapers (they've said as much). I think this event is where they'll officially unveil that device, along with any newspaper/content partnerships they've lined up. Just my guess...
I would tend to agree that where Sony could get the most "bang for the buck" would be to increase the number of sources of material to read on their product. Having just introduced two new ereaders, I would guess that they would now work on partnering with others to provide material.

Back on August 5, I saw this that, in my mind, confirms at least the possibility of new sources of material.

News Corp May Break Ties With Amazon Over Kindle Terms-Fox Business
Wednesday 08/05/2009 6:06 PM ET - Dow Jones News
News Corp. (NWS) may break ties with Amazon (AMZN) over pricing terms for the Kindle e-reader, News Corp. Chairman and Chief Executive Rupert Murdoch said Wednesday in a conference call, according to a report on Fox Business Network. Murdoch also said News Corp. is in talks with Sony Corp. (SNE) about making content available on that company's upcoming e-reader, which aims to challenge the Kindle.
Murdoch also said that this will be the fiscal year the company starts charging for online news content beyond the Wall Street Journal's Web site.
News Corp. is the parent company of Fox Business Network and Dow Jones & Co., the publisher of this newswire.

I am looking forward to getting even more stuff to load onto my reader and not enough time to read it all.

I guess they'll launch a device with a new aspect ratio and size. Maybe with a panoramic 7" panel, like on their Vaio P netbook ;-)
Not something I wish, just a feeling. Maybe they'll implement "soft buttons" with a partial touch panel, at the bottom of the panel. This could preserve readability and solve some buttons positioning problems...

If it is a firmware update, I'd say dictionary or t9 search.

Most likely, they'll show off the next ebook library, show off the 300/600s more, and possibly drop a wireless version with a large screen.

Personally, I hope they do a firmware update with dictionary/encyclopedia.

They will announce that the Sony reader department is being sold to Astak.

Predictive text. Otherwise known as "Why can't I make this damn thing work!"

It's that goofy predictive text numberpad entry system that most cellphones use. I say 'goofy' because it is, but it's incredibly useful/powerful once you get used to it.

Oh, and I seriously doubt that we'll see an implementation on one of the Sony Readers anytime soon.

Oh, like the autofill on my PDA that always tries to fill in the wrong word?

Me too. I thought it would be horrible, but it's a lot better without justification IMHO.

Not necessarily. Some devices use a word suggestion method other than T9 (my smart phone is one) and it's terrible. When I use T9 on my wife's cell phone, it's usually pretty good with most words.

on the 700 there is already basic predictive text in the note-taking function ; when you start typing a word, it will propose all the words you've recently entered starting with the same letters, along the top of the keyboard. if you see the one you want, you just tap it to complete the word without typing it in completely. so i wouldn't be too suprised to see them expand on that feature.

hell, even if just basic, nonpredictive text entering via number pad I'd be happy with. It just would be handy at times, for tech docs, glossaries, etc
