while i agree that presentation is VERY important, saying "this is the one for you" is already bs imo. why? because there is no one thing for everybody, so the statement "this is the one for you" will be incorrect for a large number of readers. it would be more balanced to say "if you are looking for a smaller reader with folder support, this reader is definitely worth checking out".

1) I read for years on a PDA, and even 5 inch is much larger than my old PDA. 2) Compared to the Kindle2, I'm not sure the 5 inch screen is any smaller. The Kindle2 has left and right margins and a header and a footer. This means the text uses much less than the full screen. As a comparison, the EZreader has only a bottom header and uses the entire left/right/top margins. I suspect that there is just as much text on this smaller screen. 3) Compared to the 6" EZreader, the screen may be similar in size. The two screens have the same resolution. In theory, this means that you should be able to fit the same amount of text on them, just that the letters on the screen will look about 12% smaller on the pocket pro. Especially for my Son's younger eyes this shouldn't be a problem. 4) The page turning speed is expected to be much faster on the pocket pro. As a result the increased page turns -- if any -- are not likely to be noticeable. Of course, the items above are just examples of why the 5" device is not any worse. Now let me explain why I think it is even better than the 6" version. A) Faster processor and faster controller = faster page turns. B) Text-to-Speech C) Smaller=less fragile? I have had experience with breaking one e-ink device by dropping it. The word is that larger devices are even more fragile/likely to have screen breaks. I am hoping that due to the weight and the decreased size the pocket pro will prove to be even more robust. D) Price: I believe the Pocket Pro is about $40 cheaper. Arguably, the difference is even more than that if you consider that you are getting even more technology for your $$. E) More portable: This means easier to carry than a 6" EZreader, and even more compact when compared to my Kindle2 with a keyboard. |

6 Inch needs interest too.
Quote:
The 6-inch is a wonderful device and we are proud of it. Everyone that has received one seems to love it that I have seen (if you go to the main Astak thread and scrol lback you will see). I guess it is fair to say that I have seen nobody complain at all that it is anything less than a good basic machine... andf that says a lot! The reason we have not been playing it up much is because it has been out 6 months and on the main thread it has been discussed very thoroughly. This does NOT mean that it is not an excellent basic eBook Reader. It has E-Ink and 8,000 pages to a single charge. It has the user-replaceable rechargeable battery and SD card slot to 4GB. It has Adobe Digital Editions. It has MP3 stereo WITH AN EQUALIZER! If sound matters to you, I would put it ahead of any other such device. Page turn speeds are good and seem to satisfy almost all. It displays 12 formats and twenty languages. FRY's electronics carries it and says it has the least returns of any eBook Reader they carry. The crush resistant case and ear buds are included!! This is not a junk case either... it is a very good one with magnetic clasp! It is built very solidly and has had no real problems mentioned. I have carried mine now for 10 months and it has been PERFECT for me... and I have gone all over the world with it. The problem is only in GETTING reviews. Finally, we have a few coming in. I posted one on the main Astak thread about 12 days ago... a link. Reviewers are not always fair and impartial. They often do NOT want to review anything but Sony or Amazon. I write them all the time. Very few will do a review. Is this fair. NO... but I cannot make them review. My advice is TRUST MobileRead Forum people. Look back thru the main thread and you will see many, many happy customers. I will post links again when I can. Last edited by Robertb; 08-11-2009 at 02:34 PM. |

Please realize that I try to personalize my responses.
Quote:
I try very hard to answer people not with form letters or posts... but to treat them as individuals. As such, when I have addressed a post to a certain person, it is what I would say to THAT person based on his post. Yes, my wife has already chastised me for using BOLD in my emails. Bold, to me, is not "screaming at the top of my lungs" only showing about 20% more emphasis. She takes offense... so I cannot blame you for taking offense. It is a habit and very hard to break! My point, here, is that in all my posts I do express my feelings. I am a rather outgoing sort and when I write a post I am writing to that one individual if it is addressed to one individual. You will note I always say "Dear All" if it is not personable to one or two individuals. I believe what I write and do not mince words much of the time. I write with conviction that what I am saying is what I am feeling. I do not write as if it was a press release... I say what I honestly feel is true and correct and my answer. This is because I view MobileRead Forum members as my friends... not my customers. At least I try to be this way and I think that is good. |

Question, Robert: Every time "playing MP3 files on an eInk device" is mentioned, it's frequently in the same breath as "8000 page turns". The long battery life (8000 page turns) is because the machine is basically OFF except when you're turning a page (or accessing the catalog), so battery life has to be significantly shorter when playing MP3s. So, what's the approximate battery life of the EZ-Readers if MP3s are playing ALL the time (ie, if you're listening to music EVERY moment that you're reading a book)?

Battery charge life with MP3
Quote:
This is a very intelligent question!! Yes, MP3 does eat up the battery charge. I would say it shortens it considerably. I can only say that I have read books and listened to my MP3 on my Blue EZ Reader Basic on an airplane that was 5 hours in the air. I started out with a fully charged battery and when I got to my destination the gauge showed a little over 1/2 charge. That tells me that it eats it pretty fast. I don't have empirical statistics or charts for you. I am just honest and answer on my own experience. The Pocket PRO has a slightly larger battery than the EZ Reader Basic. For me, however, I am "The Mad Charger". Just as I never let my gas gauge on my car get below half a tank... so I charge my "Old Blue" every night that I have taken a trip. Do I need to do so... likely not. But I LOVE my music and I refuse to be without it. I WISH I could say "it has no major impact" but instead I am telling the truth and saying it takes a real bite!! Roughly, I would expect no more than 12-14 hours playing constant music while reading. |

Happy for price drop!
Quote:
It is a bold move! The Pocket PRO is so crammed with good features and formats and colors and our main competitor in 5 inch is stripped to its theroretical shorts. Yet, they have the name and we do not. We do not wish any ill will towards our competition. They are also in a major battle. We just want to get the press to wake up and review what is a sterling device. IF they would just review it (are you listening Rob at Washington Post?) they would quickly lose the feeling that medium sized manufacturers do not warrant coverage. Astak fights this daily! People who review computers KNOW the difference between an Atom CPU and a Pentium 4 Dual-Core and can assess accordingly. Most reviewers, I fear, have abolutely NO idea why an Epson Controller is a major step forward until they try it! To them, Touchscreen and Wireless are real benefits... Epson Controller and TTS and 12 formats and six colors are not. There are also, it seems, reviewers who use the Kindle Whispernet as a yardstick ("Gee, if it does not have that it is old hat". Dropping the price has captured some attention. IF I could just get Rob at Washington Post to try a Pocket PRO and be fair... he would love it. Now, if I tell him we crammed a Pentium 4 Dual Core with 50 inch LCD screen in and he would be here on the next flight. In this press business, "Reality means nothing, perception is EVERYTHING". |

Fall is almost upon us!!
Dear All:
Just a note to remind everybody that the annual 500,000 attendee extravaganza known as CES (Consumer Electronics Show) is four months away (January 7-10 in Las Vegas). This year CES is spotlighting eBook Readers with a special Pavilion. eBooks have finally hit the big time! This show captures little mention and even less interest on MobileRead Forum. For such an informed audience about eBooks and Readers you would expect a huge party or something with a band. I fail to understand this as CES is where every eBook Reader company will be showing their current models and showing prototypes of what is coming for the entire year. It, likely, should be so critical to MobilereadForum members that they swarm the show. Motels and Hotels are cheap and you can find rooms as low as $30 a night. Shuttle buses take you from your hotel to the Convention Center. Food is always cheap in Las Vegas (Steak and Eggs platter at night can still be had for $2.99 in some places). Airfare to and from Las Vegas is heavily subsidized by the Casinos. In about 8 weeks I will have FREE Guest Passes. You can send me a private message and I will get one out to you! |

but that has been true of almost every sony product ever, there has always been a competitor, and their product is almost always better, but sonys got the name, and they have the build quality. Sonys also got their own ebook store, and the are gonna start trying to be competitive, but still Amazon is still Bigger. but when you get right down to it, Sony is spending more per unit to build, more money on advertisements, more money on the backend, and more money all around. From a business stand point, that extra 30 bucks a unit would have been nice, hopefully increased sales will make up for the price decrease. I would personally get the pocket pro if the announcement of the prs600s features make me think a firmware update for my 700 is imminent... that and I lost in vegas. also as someone who just got back from vegas, Its expensive as hell, sure if you get away from the strip the prices go down, but its impossible to get away from the strip unless you have a car. Taxis are expencive, 3.30+20c per 1/12th mile +50cents a minute. makes every taxi ride about 12 dollars or more(hell the meter is up to 5 bucks before you even leave the hotel parking lot), to get from the mandalay bay to the mirage(one end of the strip to the other about) might cost 15 bucks, to get to the convention center would be close to 20. if you stay at a small hotel or motel good luck getting a cab in less than a half hour the tram is 5 bucks each way. and you still have to walk almost a mile to get from your locaton to the tram, than from the tram to your destination. Buffets range from 25-45 dollars for the entire day, per person. which is the cheapest. but come on, it's a buffet. expect about 15 bucks per person for a restuant breakfast, 10 for fast food, 20 for lunch, and 30 for dinner. if you expect to eat well at all.. I personally pity anyone who thinks they can get a meal for less than 5 bucks. hotel rooms are cheap... during the week, there is a 250% mark up for the weekends. good hotels start at about 50, go upto 80 a night (120-200 for weekends) all in all, for 2 people, expect to spend about 200 bucks a day. and that's if you don't gamble. of course you have an 85% chance to make that back (15% chance to loose $1000 bucks or more) if you implore some progressive betting strategies. (like betting 200, 48% chance of you walking away right there with 200 bucks in your pocket, then betting 300 if you loose, now you have a 75% chance about of wining 100 bucks. and then if you loose again, you can bet 500 bucks, than you have an 85% chance of breaking even, a 15% chance of losing 1000 bucks (based on odds of losing three times in a row) please don't eat $3 steak. I beg you. |

I'm 21, my aunt took me. I didn't have to pay for anything. I didn't use any gambling strategies. mostly I hung out at the pool, went shopping, and went to eat.
it was a vacation. I lost about 110 bucks on slots, and I spent about 100 on gifts, and snacks/coffee/other. my aunt spent over a grand. I said it was expencive, not fun. I stayed at the luxor. you should stay at Treasure Island, or the Mirage, or the Venetian. (the Venetian is beautiful, and they sent the air which really is great compared to every other casino) if you do go to Vegas, Go to a restaurant named "FIRST", at the Venetian. OMG best food ever, get the Chicken Garlic Knots as an appetizer. we didn't find it till the last day we were there, and we regret that, we would have gone back. it's a bit expensive. it came to 120 w/ tip for 3 people, but totally worth it Last edited by Andybaby; 08-12-2009 at 04:30 PM. |
