I also don't see the ereader market as such staying around all that long. With the price of netbooks where it is and increase in the number of tablet sized devices I think where we are headed eventually is to a reader sized device that is a touchscreen PC essentially. The display technology is what is holding these back right now and it seems that is changing as well with more battery friendly technologies appearing that are also cost effective to produce. edit: darn takes me too long to write a post I'm already several replies behind. ![]() Last edited by derrell; 08-09-2009 at 10:25 AM. |

The eInk screen has recently been in short supply, and is manufactured by only one company. I have seen suggestions that it is a $70 part. That would make it by far the most expensive component in the reader.

Fact is, at the price point that most readers are, all these things are possible. eInk would need to be scrapped though, not fast enough! Can you imagine an half second black flash occurring every time a web page refreshed? Oh yeah, I'd like it to be touch screen so I can write on it when I want to take notes. Hmm, come to think of it my Nokia N800 has all those things except it comes in Linux with a 4.3 inch screen! Not to plug anyone eases forum, but I found this. Since I wear glasses, I want a color PDA/book reader that projects onto my eye and whatever size I want. Uses eye direction for cursor manipulation. That is unless they come up with a direct brain interface.

That's exactly what the original CyBook 1 was - a WinCE LCD tablet with a number of different reading programs installed on it.

If you consider a contact lens for each book, even DRM won't be a problem. And HarryT still could keep a dictionary. Insert the left lens with the novel and the right lens with a dictionary. People around you just may get annoyed by the constant twitching in your eyes each time you look at the footnotes ... ![]() Last edited by K-Thom; 08-10-2009 at 09:38 AM. |

Size Matters

The Pocket PRO supports about 12-14 total formats. One is Adobe Digital Editions. I agree with you that Open Format is a real blessing as a lot of the smaller publishers (like environmental papers and such) are not available in the more well-known formats. Having LIT and DOC and HTML simply open up more of the world of publishing to you. Actually, the Pocket PRO's Text-To-Speech does work beautifully with the pdf eBooks that Adobe has and the Pocket PRO does TTS on TXT. We are investigating what other formats the TTS supports. I will post. The key thing is that we get this post back to its basic premise: Astak has released a 5 inch eBook Reader for $199 that is infinitely stronger and more featured than any other 5 inch out there. This has the Epson Controller with 400MHz processor for very fast page turns, 8 level grey scale, Adobe Digital Editions, displays 12-14 formats and 20 languages, has a relaceable, rechargeable battery, has SD card slot to 16GB, comes in six colors, and has the pricing that MobileRead Forum people have stated they want. I hate to see this post sway away from this point. This is a terrific device that really is pretty incomparable for its size. I had hoped that MobileRead Forum people would really embrace this. THIS is NEWS!! What I would welcome is a comparison of the Sony PRS-300 with the Pocket PRO... being they now cost the same. Sony has the brand name... but Astak (in my opinion) has an unbeatable device out!! |
