That is the best way.

Otherwise, here's the map from your hotel

Edit: Sorry doggie, I didn't see your post! Thank you! We wish you were there too!

Don't know if I'll be able to make it, but I live in the area and have some advice:

Generally in the summer it's impossible to park in Old Montreal. Especially on fireworks nights. It's a tourist area, so people are either looking around or dodging pedestrians and then you get stuck behind a caleche (horse-drawn cart).
  • Try to avoid driving any closer to the water than Notre-Dame, since De La Commune and Saint Paul can get insane. Especially between Berri and Saint-Laurent. During the fireworks (10-10:30pm) traffic on delaCommune stops.
  • If you want to try parking for free, try around Saint-Antoine and Viger (these are the east/west roads straddling the villemarie) around Saint-Laurent or near the Palais de Congres .
  • If you're willing to pay then the Quais have parking (don't know how much), but then make sure you don't spend time on Saint Paul or delaCommune with your car. There's a parking lot at Saint-Antoine and Saint-Laurent. There's one near Place Bonaventure and there's one west of Saint-Laurent with entrances on Notre-Dame and Saint-Jacques.
  • There's very little unmetered parking that is for non-residents. A couple of metered spots turn into valet parking (or débarcadere) at 6pm, these tend to be in front of restaurants.
  • The parking jerks pass often.

My suggestion: metro/walk or bike in. The champ-de-mars station is closer. Also, there are plenty of Bixi (bike-taxi) stands. $5 gives you unlimited 1/2 hour bike rides for 24 hours.

If you're looking to fill some time up, walk around the old port, check out the clock tower and a quai or two, Place Jacques-Cartier and city hall. Also some hotels/restaurants have rooftop bars (tend to be expensive but nice views).

j0yb0y: Hope you make it tonight! The more the merrier!

I have not seen Tompe today, so I have no idea how his cold is getting on. Peadar O Guilin doesn't think he'll be making it, since he has other commitments. Rob Sawyer will not be there, since he has a panel honoring him at the con tonight.

I'm planning on bring my computer and posting a Harv and Vera episode at the pub if there is any way to get it done...

Well that was loads of fun!

I'm really happy I met you all: DanT, Quickhand, Pshrynk, Ziguezon and your lovely wife, Tompe and well, you too dad! You were all charming, interesting, friendly and genuinely nice persons!

I haven't asked if it was ok to post the piccies, so I'll wont identify anyone, but here's the group (me being behind the camera) and the bunch of devices we played with, casually displayed on a pool table. I'm a super bad photographer, sorry, and it also explains why there's no pics of the fireworks - I tried, but hey, I just couldn't!

I'm the guy with the beard on the right hand side of the group picture. Never been a shy one...

It was a wonderful evening! Verencat is a delightful person, even if a bit camera shy. Yvan is even more amusing in person than on line. Tompe is full of information about Worldcons and the world of fandom. I didn't write down the names of the other attendees, but they were fun to be with. I especially appreciated hearing tales from the Far East and what's being cooked up over there as far as book readers go...

Mine was more of an embarassed smile. Imagine this; we shamefully stole the pub's pool table under the stare of other patrons only to expose our gadgets. You know, the classic meetup pose? Only geeks can get away with that...

I would have liked it for us to be more members present there but fortunately being so few allowed us to have better conversations. P-shrynk, as he says should be pronounced, is amazingly bright, learned and loads of fun to be around with. Distance is cruel... Tompe is a force of nature, curious, intelligent, learned, quite eloquent and communicative beyond our language barriers, an other guy I'd spend hours with. DanT is also curious and quick but so shy and quiet, we didn't have enough time to develop something. Ziguezon and his lovely wife were at the other end of the table and we had so few moments together that I feel we should get together again just to chat. Quickhand is the Mobile Read geek by excellence, by himself he had half of the devices on the table. Now that is amazing since in Quebec only the Bookeen Gen3 is officially available. He also had a prototype of a reader that was... I'll say steampunked. It was so cool I wanted to tear up the ol' 500 apart to do somethig similar with it. An other totally interesting guy. And then there was VCat, that charming young lady, so shy herself and so happy for that special encounter that even as I am her father, I had difficulty understanding why the usual chatterbox was so quiet.

To you all that were there, thank you for sharing that brief moment, I wish there will be more!

I know I promised live pictures and comments from the discussion but as I found out the wifi link at the place where we were seated was so weak and impossible to manage that I selfishly decided to enjoy the most of what was possible; the enjoyment of great company!

The movies I took were of an incompatible format for MR, and of shoddy cinematographic quality, so I won't bother trying to post them. The pictures were not great either Cat's were much clearer. But still here's one of a precious pile of junk.
(Note to oneself: "Turn on the damned flash once in a while!" )

Oh, by the way, I'm the smiling gray seal on the left.

Looking forward to the next meeting. I know what to do next and I promise it will be better.
Yvan
