I think that since publishing houses have invested in DRM schemes they will go on with them until DRM is proved to make them lose money. Which is not quite the case yet.

you mean one specific one ? or in general ? it's not surprising either way, of course.

hm, maybe every time we decide *not* to buy a book because of the drm, we should write to them and say we got it at the public library instead.

From his hints, I would say that it was probably Murdock, but that's a wild guess...

This evening's Ebook session was a bit more of the same. There were new panelists and the discussion of DRm got a bit more heated. There was, specifically, some despair that one does not "own" an ebook in the traditional sense. Nothing that has not been discussed a lot here at MobileRead.

I noticed last year that the E-book panels did not give so much because I had seen and often participated in the discussion here on MobileRead. So I have chosen other panels than E-book panels this year.

Absolutely, a populist move always gets them thinking but to start such a wheel is very hard to do in this period of selfishness, and that is what they're banking on.

Well, I just escaped from a panel on Medieval Technology which was little mnore that noe of the panelists droning on about how superior ancient cultures were to the present day. I won't even get started on the FSO that I was sitting next to who is badly in need of a donation of a bar of soap. And the circulation system was out. Not an auspicious start to the day.

Next up: Ebooks from draft to fianl product. Then Death, Illness and Disability in Fantsy and Science Fiction. Later: We are the Knights Who Say f***!

I have some strange tastes.

The Ebook from draft to final pub panel was ingteresting. They talked about the process of getting an Epublisher and marketing yourself. The Epublishing world is described as "The Wild West" and it is seen as a wide open vista. There are the resultant rustlers and train robbers, of course, but you have to be wary of that anywhere. I got some lists of e-publishers who are interested in new authors and will post them when I get back to my room tonight and eventually put them as a sticky in the Writer's Corner. MR got mentioned as a place to get info about formats, etc.

nice.

that's not the first time i've heard epublishing described as "the wild west" ; in fact there was a short article on the radio here recently and a french author used precisely that expression (he also said that it wasn't a question of being "for" or "against" ebooks, because they're "simply inevitable". or did he call them "necessary" ? can't remember, and he said rather poetically "you can't stop a river with your hands" (hercules notwithstanding). it was Bernard Werber, a science fiction writer, in case you've heard of him).

I think it's that Wild West attitude that makes writing now more exciting than ever before Although I would substitute wild west with Punk (but I would say that )
