The Briar King, by Greg Keyes, is volume One of The Kingdoms of Thorn and Bone series. All are on Kindle, with the rest of the volumes priced at $6.39 each.

Book Description
Two thousand years ago, the Born Queen defeated the Skasloi lords, freeing humans from the bitter yoke of slavery. But now monstrous creatures roam the land—and destinies become inextricably entangled in a drama of power and seduction. The king’s woodsman, a rebellious girl, a young priest, a roguish adventurer, and a young man made suddenly into a knight—all face malevolent forces that shake the foundations of the kingdom, even as the Briar King, legendary harbinger of death, awakens from his slumber. At the heart of this many-layered tale is Anne Dare, youngest daughter of the royal family . . . upon whom the fate of her world may depend.

Queen of the Orcs: King's Property by Morgan Howell. It's the first book of a trilogy (the others two books are $5.59 each on the Kindle)

From Booklist

*Starred Review* Conscripted into King Kregant's army, Dar is branded to make running away difficult. Assigned to serve food to the orc regiment, she discovers that they worship Muth la, the mother of everything, and can take food only when served by a female as well as with a ceremonial phrase indicating that it comes from Muth la. When Dar realizes that one of the orc soldiers' human leaders has it in for her, she turns to the orc Kovok-mah for protection and attempts to learn his language, which makes her an outcast from the other women in the army, many of whom service the soldiers in return for sharing the plunder. When young Twea is conscripted, Dar takes her under her wing, and Twea enchants Kovok-mah. Using logic and chutzpah, Dar keeps herself and Twea safe, however, by sleeping in the orcs' enclosure. While huge and strong, the orcs are straightforward and honorable, and their language reflects their lack of guile. They are fighting because their queen requires it. Howell has created a fascinating, believable world and a compassionate, kick-ass heroine who helps the weak and uses wit and agility to survive and triumph. Tixier Herald, Diana

200 Pomegranates and an Audience of One: Creating a Life of Meaning and Influence (Kindle Edition)

Editorial Reviews
Review
I am fortunate enough to rub shoulders with Shawn everyday as we pursue ministry together. I have watched as he approaches each area of responsibility he has been given with the eye of an artist toward an audience of one. He lives what he writes about and our lives and ministries have been better for it. I am confident you will be encouraged and better off for being around Shawn, as I have been, as you connect with God s artistic vision for your life through this book. --Greg Surratt, lead Pastor, Seacoast Church

Product Description
Shawn Wood explores the story of obscure Old Testament
character Huram of Tyre, a bronzeworker putting the finishing
touches on Solomon s Temple. Huram was renowned for his
talent, but he saved the most ornate details of his temple work,
including 200 intricately crafted pomegranates, for a place
where most people would never even notice it: thirty-four feet off
the ground, atop two massive columns.

Huram s example shows readers the importance of using talents
and skills to benefit others and to contribute something of lasting
worth, and doing our best even if God is the only audience.

Sporadic, thanks for the great list of freebies specifically for the Kindle.

I just got my Kindle2 about 2 weeks ago and I'm loving it as much as my Sony.

Two very good Readers.

Keep up the good work on your list.

Thanks for the praise, I always love to hear when this list helps new owners.

I was right on the verge of buying a Sony PRS-505 before the Kindle 2 came out and sent the price of the K1 down very low (paid $205 for mine). Even though their software situation almost always sucks, Sony is amazing when it comes to hardware design. The VAIO Pocket 40GB MP3 player was the best I have ever used (sadly, it died when my cat knocked it off of my DVD tower )

Surviving the Fog by Stan Morris - $1 [Horror]

Quote:
Have you ever been to summer camp? What would you do if almost all of the adults left “for a few hours” and they had not returned a week later? What would you do if no one’s cell phone worked and your parents never showed up to take you home? What would you do if you realized that the area was surrounded by a mysterious brown fog that was dangerous? How would you survive the winter? How would you get more to eat?
This is what Mike, John, Desi and the other campers have to contend with in Surviving the Fog.
Warning: sexual situations, cursing, brief violence
Baling by Carol Hanrahan - $1 [Young Adult]

Quote:
In this heartwarming young adult novel, two teenage brothers, unwillingly sent to the country for a summer to bale hay, discover adventure, danger, and love all wrapped around a lost Civil War treasure mystery.

The last place Nick Lawson wants to be is out in the middle of the country with his little brother John, helping his Aunt Jess bale hay all summer long. After discovering a Civil War uniform in the attic with a key hidden in the jacket lining, the boys search for a treasure they believe was hidden years ago by their great-uncle. With the help of the neighboring dairy farmer?s daughter, Lainey, Nick finds adventure at every turn, when he barely escapes a tornado, gets into a fight at the county fair, almost burns up in an old chapel, explores a cave, and experiences a first kiss while swimming in the nearby creek.
Unbroken Hearts by Anna Murray - $0.99 [Western]

Quote:
Orphaned on the trail and deceived by an outlaw sheriff, Sarah Anders is on the verge of a career as a soiled dove at Lola's brothel. She desperately grabs at her only chance for honest work -- at the Mineral Creek Ranch, owned by handsome Cal Easton. While working as a nurse to Cal's mother, a stroke victim, she learns that Cal is a man haunted by the past and cursed by a deadly enemy bent on destroying his family and his successful ranch operation. Sarah also hides a secret past, which Cal must uncover and reconcile before they are free to love.

IRRETRIEVABLY BROKEN by IRMA FRITZ - $0.99 [Fiction]

Quote:
Irretrievably Broken is the haunting, funny, and heart-breaking account of German ex-patriots Nora, Ruth, and Bettina Adler. The plot takes us across the U.S., to the bush country of Canada, and to a cold case murder scene in Germany, as this multi-cultural family deals with diversity and racism. The novel is populated with unforgettable characters in a sometimes shocking and always unflinchingly honest exploration of the past. Nora is obsessed with her Native-American husband she's about to divorce and consumed with guilt over the harm she may have caused a friend; Ruth, whose blunt statements are often inappropriate, witnessed a brutal murder and saved a life during the Holocaust; and 12-year-old Bettina, child of a black African-American and a white German, is devastated by the death of her mother and neglect of her father. Irretrievably Broken is a novel of family and friendship, of love and loss, of secrets and revelations, of guilt and forgiveness.
Mr. Penumbra's Twenty-Four-Hour Book Store by Robin Sloan - $0.99 [Short Story Technothriller]

Quote:
This is a modern fairy tale. It's a 6,000-word short story about finding a job, having a weird boss, and meeting someone you like. But behind it all, there's a mystery:

What is the secret of Mr. Penumbra's Twenty-Four-Hour Book Store?

This is also a story about books, writing, and technology. So, if you're someone who's interested in the Kindle itself--if you're interested in what it suggests about the future--then you'll probably find something to enjoy here.
The Beneficiary by Marshall Thornton - $0.99 [Short Story Suspense]

Quote:
Set in the ’90s during the Los Angeles riots, this contemporary noir follows a struggling real estate agent who’s cooked up a plan to make a big pot of money. Hanging around a Narcotics Anonymous meeting she finds a former addict struggling through the last stages of AIDS. Offering him support, she mortgages her home and uses the money to buy property in his name. Property she insures. As she waits for him to die so she can collect her big payday, she begins to suspect he may not be everything she thought.
Wysard by Carolyn Kephart - $0.99 [Fantasy]

Quote:
The wysard Ryel leaves the great Art-citadel Markul to rediscover the long-lost spell that will release his mentor's spirit from the wraithworld of the Void, but a malignant sorcerer likewise imprisoned has enlisted the aid of Ryel's strongest rival to find the spell first. Amid dangers, joys and temptations, Ryel discovers unlikely allies to help him in his quest, and learns that he may well gain all that he wishes...although perhaps not as he wished it. Wysard and its sequel Lord Brother have been critically acclaimed as lyrical, exotic, archetypal tales of love and magic - fantasy at its highest and most heartfelt.
A Different Tune by L.K. Campbell - $0.99 [Historical Romance]

Quote:
When Scott Riley returns from World War II, he has one aim-to meet Cassie Wright, who has been his pen pal through most of his war experience. He has marriage on his mind, but she has other plans for her future. Cassie is a talented pianist, who dreams of a life on the concert stage. Will she give up her dreams for Scott, or will he chase hers?
The God Wars by Sierra Philpin - $0.99 [Religion Fiction]

Quote:
At its heart, The God Wars is a book about September 11, 2001, but the events of that day are barely mentioned. On one level, it’s a tale of utter hopelessness. On another, it’s about the clear path toward hope.

Some will see The God Wars as anti-religion, perhaps even anti-American. But the careful reader will see that it’s pro-peace, pro-sanity, and pro-love. Without being preachy, it’s about the benefits of setting aside dogma and mindless patriotism, and pledging allegiance instead to the worldwide community of humankind.

The story focuses on four characters: a vagabond journalist with a knack for prophecy; a mysterious woman discovering that the bedrock of her reality — time — does not exist; a young bride who finds her true identity in a change of clothes; and a physics professor whose unifying “Theory of Everything” splinters his mind.

Two new free titles today.

Suffering and the Sovereignty of God, by John Piper and Justin Taylor, et al.

Book Description
John Piper and Justin Taylor bring together the works of eight authors who address the issue of how God s sovereignty relates to human suffering. This is not an academic book, it s a book written by people who have suffered great pain in their lives and want readers to know what God has taught them in the midst of the painful messiness of real life. This book grew out of practical experience and applies Scripture to the world where we live. It will encourage Christians to live more consistently by God's grace.

Looks like Amazon and Samhain were just slow getting this one out this week, as Lessons in Love, by Kate Davies, is now free in the Kindle store (it's also free and DRM-free at Books on Board). The book description is now a bit longer and has one of Samhain's typical (but tamer) content warnings.

Book Description

Move over, Mary Poppins! A free-spirited teacher is about to give a buttoned-up royal something he never expected-a lesson in love. Hungry for adventure and eager to break free of her snobby home town, Brynn Dexter takes a teaching job in a foreign country, sight unseen. But when she arrives, she discovers the Laurivenia Academy doesn-t exist. And neither does the teaching job. Alex du Charbonneaux, crown prince of Laurivenia, is tired of intense media scrutiny, and wary of social-climbing women who stoop to feigning interest in his vulnerable five-year-old daughter in order to get close to him. So if he fudged the details of the -teaching job- to protect his child-and his privacy-who can blame him? His careful plans begin to unravel the moment Brynn appears on his doorstep. She is beautiful and free spirited, nothing like the dowdy, obedient nanny he ordered. While being a nanny to a princess is a far cry from the teaching position Brynn expected, she quickly realizes the child is in dire need of a little fun in her life-as is her stuffed-shirt father. As she sets out to teach both of them how to live a little, sparks fly and unexpected passion burns between her and Alex. But Alex-s deep-rooted suspicions linger, and Brynn struggles with the feeling that she is not good enough for him. So when the paparazzi discover their affair, all bets are off. Can the prince and the nanny find common ground-and learn to trust in love?

Warning, this title contains the following: explicit sex.

I'd almost vote to keep all samples off, even if free, since we get free samples anyway. But that would probably mean skipping the free "business chapters" that are there, some of which can be interesting (and business schools actually teach you to only read the chapter that pertains to you in these books). At least the ones that are just the index, anyway.
