pretty close, yes. you can hear it pronounced in this page : http://www.mediadico.com/dictionnair.../LISEUSE/parle
click on "écoutez la définition" if you want to replay it.
Thanks, Z!

I had to listen to it at least 6 times, that woman speaks VERY quickly, but I LOVE it! I feel so International when I say it. You all can call it whatever you want. I'm sticking with "liseuse"!

Now, if I could just find a black and white striped shirt and a beret, my life would be perfect. Don't you just love stereotypes.

But if I say to people: I want a liseuse, they'll look at me as if I'd been crazy. So, I'll just don't give it a name and just say I read books, and say that I'll read it electronically if they keep asking.

that's so funny !! a friend of mine and i were talking one day about stereotypes in films, and we were laughing that if you want to show that a character is french, you just give him a striped shirt !! it must be some kind of official uniform, because all french are wearing striped shirts every day, in cinema-land, apparently !

if it helps, if i say to people "i like to read on my liseuse", they'll also look at me as if i'm crazy. so then i explain what is (like an ipod but for books...) then they understand. but i have to teach them all what is a liseuse, first. of course, now all my friends know. i should go stand on a streetcorner somewhere and shout about it to everyone passing by.

it's true, a lot of french speak fast. (not so much in the south, though. you understand, all those extra vowels takes time to pronounce. )

Scene: a branch of a well-known bookstore

Me: Good afternoon esteemed young retail professional. I would like to buy a liseuse.

Shop assistant: I'm afraid we don't sell lizards, sir. This is a bookshop.

Me: Very amusing. Or could it be that you do not know the correct term - liseuse - and refer to the device as an 'electronic book reader' or some other unstylish terminology. I am surprised - I took you for a sophisticated young person, 'au fait' (as the French say) with current trends, but perhaps I was wrong...

Shop assistant: No, no... I was only joking. Of course I know that it is a liseuse. I never call it anything else. If you would come this way sir.

I started to type that the translator speaks like a Chicagoan. When I first moved to the East coast, people in my office would constantly ask me to slow down so that they could follow what I was saying. I thought they were dragging the conversation and would be mentally wishing they would speed things up!

Et tu, Brute?

It's not an ipod but for books! You'll never hear me say Ipod when I mean a MP3 player. The term MP3 player was there before the Ipod.

sorry, sorry ! but really, a couple of my less-tech-knowledgeable friends probably wouldn't know what is an mp3 player, but an ipod, even they can understand. (a sorry state of affairs, i know. if if makes you feel better, i actually do call my own a "lecteur mp3" and that's how i refer to them in general.)

I will have you know that I frequently embarrass my children by asking salespeople difficult and, at times, bizarre questions! Last week when I was at the Sony Style store, I heard large groans from Shannon and Zachary when I started asking the salesperson about the possibility of new Sony Readers. Embarrassing the kids is the best part of my job as MOM!

He had heard there were new models coming but that was all. He was very stoic! I think he knew more, but the kids wouldn't let me continue with the interrogation! Silly children. I had the rubber hose and overhead spotlight ready to go and everything!
