All I was doing was giving dimension and weight. Not trying to imply anything at all. Dimensions and Weight are the 2 main deciding factors of 'portability'.

Hmmm decisions... I love my 505, so does hubby get a 300 or I get a 600 and he my 505. Great to finally see details on these.

Now I'm wishing I had a hubby I could pass my 505 off to, so I could justify getting the 600.

Not a good enough reason to go husband-hunting, though.

I am seriously thinking of getting 600's for me and my wife. I must admit I'm a little unsure about the touch screen however. I like the idea of taking notes, but I worry that over time the screen might become scratched and hard to read through. I keep having these visions of those credit card readers you have to sign, which you can sometimes barely see through the scratches!

I also wonder how convenient is the touch screen for page turns. What exactly do you push to turn the page? The tiny physical buttons don't seem particularly ergonomic to me. It seems like more (and larger) page turn buttons would be a nice addition but I'm not sure as I've never tried one of these yet. What do 700 users think of theirs for long reading sessions? Do you sometimes wish for physical buttons?

Why worry soo much about justfying buying it? After all, humans rarely make rational decisions.

My reasoning for something like this goes: I want it. I can use it. I can afford it. I buy it.

I've been using a 700 for 7 months now. No scratches on the touch screen, nor fingerprints. I love it for turning pages. Now, it took a little getting used to. The pictures all show someone swiping with a fingertip, but I found it not quite sensitive enough for that to work reliably. When I discovered that a very light swipe with the stylus works well, I started turning pages with a flick of the back of my fingernail. It works great. Very natural, very comfortable. Sometimes I use the buttons if I happen to be holding it with one hand, but that's less ergonomic.

Thumbs up on the touch screen for me.

On an impulse, I decided to ask Sony CS whether they'd be offering firmware upgrades to the earlier Readers to provide dictionary support. I tried two routes:

Email support wrote back rather robotically that no firmware upgrade was currently available. Well, duh.

Live chat went away for a while, then came back and said that developers were working on an upgrade. Buoyed by this, I asked to whom I might write to express my encouragement. That broke the camel's back, and this person went all robotic and replied that Sony does not accept product suggestions unless a patented idea is offered, etc., etc.

But there is a ray of hope here--at least one hint that they are working on an upgrade.

Hmm, I was all psyched about the 600 until I saw it weighs 10 oz. That's not a lightweight. I'll probably still get on and use it at home, not lug it around with me.

And yes it's only 3 or 4 oz more than the 505, but every little bit makes a difference when you've already got 8 lbs of flotsam hanging off your shoulder.

The updates for 700 and 505 are coming, that's been mentioned by several sources. Whether they will include the dictionary is unknown...

Get a smaller bag You can make do with a lot less than you think (I go through this exercise at least once a year...) It creeps up on you, but in most areas of life: more space => more stuff and more clutter

I'd seen a lot of speculation about it, but nothing mentioning actual information. Guess I missed those. In any case, the question I put to the rep was specifically about dictionary support.

There will be a firmware upgrade, because it is apparently needed to add Mac support, but I agree there has been no news of what else (if anything) it changes.

Boy isn't that the truth! I mean they do know people are carrying zunes, usb sticks/cables, cards, dental floss, cell phones, and wallets/keys in their purses too, right?
