Sigh, a company! It drained me and spit me out because I refused to conform (to be honest, I tried, that's what killed me). That's why I worked in a grocery after, it was ... a well deserved break (that is: until it turned ugly).

As a kid, did you ever work for McDonald's? It was my first job ever (a whole year of greasy Cat) and the particular restaurant I worked at was really strict on company policies. The training involved watching videos on how to salt the fries: you had to pour the salt over the fry bin with a M motion. I tried a W once and got a warning! We also had to smile constantly, even in the break room! Not that I don't smile a lot, I do, put this was just extreme! I had a few warnings about that too...

I'm not overtly non-conformist, which probably also helps, but my general view has always been that if it hinders me doing my job effectively then it gets ignored.

That's... utterly daft!

I only ever worked in supermarkets as a kid (and a photo library, but that wasn't exactly legit

) and thankfully none of them were that obsessed! I think you've just explained why McDs fries are (or were, it's been years since I ate in one), so oversalted.

Mind you, I did once get told that a vanilla-scented perfume was inappropriate in a supermarket

(This from a manager who was drenched in something like Poison...)

i had a job in a place where i could have used a booklet like that. i still don't know what they did !

i'm not agressively non-conformist (i mean i don't go out of my way to show it just on principle) but i don't make any effort to hide it either. i also have a real problem with authority (i like to question it... and i have a hard time with rigid hierarchies where someone is supposed to be "above" me), and i consider that respect should be earned and can be lost if you don't continue to deserve it. you can imagine how things went for me in corporate-land.

(it's part of why now i work freelance !

seems like vanilla is more appropriate than poison anywhere food is involved !

Why do you think I chose this name? It is a clear sign that if forced I will melt the mold in whatever situation I'll be backed up.

Is this why there are no fights in the lounge, that we know instinctively where not to step, that there are buttons not to depress?
