So it's this pivotal question after all ...
What comes first? The end of the world or the firmware update from Bookeen? Hmm, that's a tough one. ![]() |

I've not been paying very close attention lately (sort of gave up a while ago on Bookeen firmware updates) but I'm assuming that there has not been an update (for the rest of us) since the group got together in France? I hope somebody will post a thread with a very clear title (something along the lines of "Miracle happens!!! ...."
![]() I'm NOT unhappy with my Cybook (works fine for me) but I too would be very hesitant to buy again from Bookeen after so much negative press here about their customer service and communication issues. |

It should be noted, that if your Cybook needs a repair Bookeens seems to do a good & quick job (lots of people have said so) and this is a very important part of customer service. Communications and keeping promises is quite another matter... |

Does anyone know what to expect from ePub firmware? ePub readers (software) available so far have some problems. I have tested some of them and I found following issues:
First one is that few of them don't display non-English characters (I'm Polish, so characters like "ążńśćłó" are quite important for me). Second one is hyphenation. While the eInk displays have paper-like look, lot of texts don't look even close to what you can see in books. Not having automatic hyphenation causes different line color (average gray based on characters and white spaces). While I can put soft hyphens automatically in most of the documents I have, I was not able to find reader that actually uses them correctly. Most of you probably don't care about it, but there are languages with average words much longer than English ones. English average word is 5.1 characters. But for example Finnish is 7.7. (Comparison list is available at http://blogamundo.net/lab/wordlengths/). Also there are people who like to use bigger font sizes. Having either soft hyphens correctly rendered or some auto hyphenation mechanism is quite important. I'm waiting for new firmware with anticipation, but also I'm quite prepared for huge disappointment. Regards MJ |

What the link between hyphens and grays? May you want to speak about justification? |

In typography, the gray level or colour is, so to speak, the apparent colour of a page (or portion of a page) when viewed from far away (or with your eyes almost closed). It's related to how thick the letters are, how spaced out the words and lines are, etc. One of the aims of good typography is getting a uniform grey level across the page, which means that the letters and words should not appear condensed in some parts and spread out in other parts.
The lack of good hyphenation prevents finding good linebreaks, which results in some lines being too spread out and the grey level not being uniform, and that's poor typography. |

Ok you speak about the typographic gray. ("gris typographique" in french or "grauwert" in german, but I can't found a real translation in english, maybe only "gray"?)
[troll]If you really want good hyphenation & justification, you should use only TeX/LaTeX[/troll] |

Mobi cybook doesn't support them in either TXT or HTML. It only supports them in Mobi files. That's one of the things I bought Cybook for 2 years ago, and I'm still waiting for a bugfix.
