I think people are crazy to buy Bookeen's latest device because of the lack of support
Well, support was one of the reasons i when i chose the Gen 3. And one on the reason when I chose the Opus.
Yeah bookeen is slow with with update so ? My Gen 3 still works, though i now realy need ePub. But, the one time i REALLY needed them after i broke my screen, bookeen provided support faster than I could have thought.

Nope; We had the opportunity the meet the people from Bookeen and realise that they peaple trying to do tier job the best they can. And also, we French have more contact with bookeen, so, we're felling the no-com less.

Just a curiosity ... It is not possible to extract the installed firmware from a device? Like a ROM backup.

I'm sure it is. However, to do so one would have to open the case, find the serial port connection pads, wire up a serial-to-usb connector cable, hack the OS... It ain't easy, let me tell you.

And there's really no point in me doing so because I've already *GOT* build 796 on both my Cybooks. Now when the latest build comes out, I'll download it like everyone else.

Of course, given that we're now in August and so *many* small companies in France take much of the first part of August off, it'll be interesting to see if we see any new firmware release during the next few weeks.

That is exactly what I was telling. Most people don't care and simply read books. Only people who are complaining are writing here and people who have no complaints or are satisfied are never here. They don't bother to tell you every few days they are still satisfied.

I'm not complaining here. I got what I paid for: a functioning device for reading books. Firmware upgrades? Nice to have. Do I need them? No! The few bugs in the original firmware were corrected.

Do they have bad comunication skills? Yes...But try to communicte with Sony or Creative. Do I believe any company about future upgrades? No, They are all terrible. People had bad experiences with Vista. Mostely because all hardware companies refused to update they firmware. And they had almost 2 years to do it. They simply didn't do it.

Did I get service from Bookeen when I really needed it? Yes, within 5 days everything was arranged. Email was answered within hours. They couldn't have done it faster simply because sending/receiving the package from the Netherlands to France vv. is taking 4 days. They even managed to give the new, more luxurious, device the same PID so I had no trouble with the DRM

I´d like to second Ortep´s last two posts.
And count me to the non-complaining croud. I am just waiting for ePub-support, because in german sector of the world every bookstore has gone ePub. But I am a good boy and patient

I would bet I know the reason for the delay: economic crisis. Small company, little income (niche product - small costumer circle), high expences, that led to dismissal elsewhere. Assuming they dismissed the chief programmer (or he quit himself - happens these times as well), it might have happened no one left could decypher the code...

As far as I know he wanted to upload the firmware on the second Monday next week. Absolutely a no-go!

But here's news about a scheduled release date in a mail from Bookeen to a German member:

Quote:
Sir,

The firmware upgrade is being finalised. It should be release during the
month of August.

For the time being, we invite you to reformat your Cybook gen3. You may
refer to the attached document.

Best regards,
Bookeen Support Team
The advice about reformatting is just for this one customer. That no spare time sports for the rest of us! And, no, don't muse about the "should" in the reply.

Wasn't all that worried about 'this one customer' info. However, if we can't 'muse' and speculate over the "should", it's gonna be a LOOOOOOoooooonnnnnnnnngggggggg month of August!

Also, August 31st happens to be 'in the month of August", yes? That's a pretty darned long time to wait - and fits quite nicely into my "they're all on vacation" scenario.
