According to the Jinke site, the Hanlin V5 (same as EZ Reader Pocket Pro) supports "English, Chinese, Russian, Ukraine, Turkish, French, Spanish, German, Dutch, Japanese, Korean, Bulgarian, Estonian, Polish and more", which is only 14 if you don't count the "and more".

Yes, Russian is well supported on Hanlin devices.

The latest firmware for EZ Reader shows all of the above plus: Catala, Magyar, Italian, Norwegian, Slovensko. Greek. Others could be supported in PDF format using embedded fonts.

I don't see any reason to pay $229 for EZ Reader when jetBook available for $160(BB&B with coupon)-$200(NewEgg - free shipping, no taxes outside CA)

This is true only if the Jetbook meets your needs. I looked at it, but decided against it because of no support for Adobe Digital DRM (so I could read library books) and no support for Ereader DRM (which all of my ebooks are in this format).

The pricing of reading devices with 5" screens is about the get interesting. The EZ Reader Pocket Pro, at $229 direct, appears to be a significantly better deal than the Bookeen Opus at $280 direct. However, the original target for the Pocket Pro of sub-$200 prices appear to have been reached by the Sony PRS-300. This was listed for pre-order at $199 at J&R. I assume this is the list price, and over time the Sony's will be discounted. Based on features, I think the Pocket Pro may be worth the $30 extra over the PRS-300 (I have ordered at Pocket Pro, and won't be switching to the PRS-300). However, if the street price of the PRS-300 goes to $170 or less then this may be bad news for Pocket Pro sales. On the other hand, the PRS-300 has "validated" a 5" screen as the way to go for low cost reading devices.

I agree that for those who don't care about DRMed formats (and I certainly could not care less about them) the jetBook is a viable alternative. Once OpenInkPot is available for the Hanlin V5, it will still offer some advanced features that might make it a better choice for some over the jetBook. Note that there are other DRM-free reading devices with 5" EInk screens, see E-book Reader Matrix.

According to the matrix Sony 300 has no SD card slot that is unexactable for me. It looks like Sony tried to make it very cheap...

I agree with both of your statements. I believe the pocket pro has over $30 of extra value. However, a Sony credit card deal could get the price down below $100 -- possibly even under $50. This would definitely be a game changer.

I doubt they would offer the same dollar discount for a cheaper device. They might offer a $50 discount with their card but not $100 or more for a $200 device.

I've been watching these threads for what seems forever. However, I'm not going to make the mistake of buying something for a "just-around-the-corner" desired attribute again...I did that almost two years ago with the Cybook (the website said folders were "coming soon") and they still haven't released them (although I do understand it may actually...finally!...be coming soon).

I too prefer eReader for my DRM purchases...but I'm not putting down money, regardless how pretty all the new colors are, until (and if ever) there is the promised eReader support. I'll continue reading it on my PDA or liberating it for my lovely Sony.

As one of those who called the Pocket Pro “vaporware” I feel badly that RobertB was hurt by the use of the term; that was never my purpose. However, as a member of the Mobileread Forum, I feel it is incumbent on all members to be truthful. I’m posting to restate the assertion that the Pocket Pro is still vaporware, just like the Sony PRS300, Opus, BeBook Mini, and all the other promised but not yet available devices—they are ALL vaporware.

Vaporwear means promised, usually under development, hardware and software. It remains vaporwear until it is released. The process is similar to the scientific method. Once the product is completed it is reported—in the case of book readers that is to say, it’s released for sale. The penultimate step is peer review. Once the actual reader is in the hands of people who use readers, they will attach it to thousands of different PCs, dozens of operating systems and throw every imaginable file format, from a wide variety of sources, at it and try to read the books under every imaginable condition… and report back to the community at large what they find. But as to vaporware, I repeat, until any product is in the hands of people who actually use that type of product it remains vaporware.

As I understand it, shaking down book reading hardware and software is what a forum like Mobileread does. It’s all part of the process. There is no point in having hurt feelings. Every device and every program goes through the same process. This is how they get better (or not). Magazine reviews of book readers, rare as they have been, have so far always been hopelessly inadequate and often sound like sales pitches rather than objective critiques.

Personally, I’m looking forward to seeing the Pocket Pro move to the next stage and can’t wait to read the results.
