By the way WDE, they wouldn't let me get an extended warranty at the Sony Style store. They said it had to be within 90 days of the purchase of my reader (which was a Christmas gift). Oh, well. Maybe I'll have to ask for the 600 and give my 700 to my husband. ![]() |

you guys all forget another advantage to the 600
pdf support.. something u gotta pay amazon 500 dollars or so to get in the DX. and it sucked imho. how good will this pdf support be? also is the processor faster on the 600. I find the 505 to be slow in changing pages. all in all... looks good. I want one today. right now I have the kindle 2 which is most satisfying but I love throwing money away on gadgets. cheers mates and happy reading from a newbie. |

It is clear that the PRS-300 is a PRS-505 follow-on with a slightly smaller screen, and no removable media. For example it has 3 font sizes.
The PRS-600, on the other hand, appears to be an improved version of the PRS-700 with no side-light. In addition to all the improvements over the PRS-505 in the PRS-700 (including touch screen and 5 font sizes), it adds
Both still have 8 greyscales, which surprised me. The big remaining question is how good is the PRS-600's screen? In other words, how much of the PRS-700's fuzzyness was due to the sidelights. |

I think it's time for me to do the I WAS TOTALLY RIGHT dance!!!!!
You know you guys are getting excited now ![]() I'm super excited about this. Here we all are thinking Amazon's going to dominate the market and Sony's left trying to catch up (making a DX sized model) when in reality they were going for something completely different. |

Some k to komugi for finding the 300/600 J&R preorder page and igorsk for reporting the manuals.
![]() I'm not craving touch screen per se other than for the virtual keyboard and freehand notes, but touch screen navigation seems like something that might grow on me after while. BTW, I'm also in the don't-really-need-wireless camp. But I can understand some being attracted to Kindle Whispernet if they need quick/anywhere access to periodicals, book club recommendations or bestsellers--which I don't. Of the course the 600 display has to be at least as clear and sharp as the 505 or Sony has wasted a lot of time and money. Most of all, on behalf of blue PRS 505 owners, I must say it's a tremendous mistake if Sony discontinues blue! Maybe go with a true navy, or grayish blue instead of the purplish blue, but don't eliminate the bestest, smartest, most evolvdest color in the world! And don't try to tell me it wasn't selling as well as red. ![]() ![]() Last edited by spirit_wolf; 08-02-2009 at 11:07 AM. Reason: forgot to mention igorsk |

Like the 505 and 700, the 600 will probably also Adobe Mobile 9 for the reading software.

The details of the dictionary support is not known yet, but it already seems to be only on the PRS-600. There are actually two "Oxford American" dictionaries for sale in the MOBI format: New Oxford American Dictionary for $60 and Concise Oxford American Dictionary for $19.95. The Kindle's all have the New Oxford American Dictionary, with over 250,000 entries and definitions. Probably the PRS-600 will have this version too (the Concise has 180,000 entries and definitions).
The price is one reason why this is probably missing from the PRS-300, although the lack of a touchscreen could be another. Obviously, Sony and Amazon are not paying $60 per device but they are paying something for the dictionary. I also doubt the PRS-700 will get a dictionary, based on the cost to Sony of adding this. On the Kindles it is possible to add 3rd party dictionaries, but this has proven to be much more difficult than on other MOBI-based devices. I wonder if this will be possible at all on the Sony. Note that one issue will be DRM. Oxford University Press may be ok with providing a DRM-free dictionary if it is built into the firmware, but if so this will make commercial alternatives very unlikely. Presumably, the dictionary will be different in each market. Last edited by wallcraft; 08-02-2009 at 11:24 AM. |
