You missed a point there. I bought an opus because, yes, I'm sure that the ePub firmware update for gen will show up. Having two reader not handling the same format would be a mess.

Since yesterday, I've got the Cybook Opus. It's fine for ePUB, but close to disastrous for PDF.
I guess, Gen3's firmware updates mainly will result from development for Opus. If Opus still got extremely weak PDF support, I don't expect anything more for Gen3.
On Opus, PDFs are zoomed, only ePUBs are reflowed.

I asked bookeen about re-flow. Answer was in the line of: we tried it, but it still don't work as well as we want it to.
"disastrous" is not the word I would have used, but there is room for improvement, and pdf is definitively where i want to see bookeen concentrate their effort. I never expected a 5" or 6" to be suitable to read A4 pdf though. Pdf is a crap format for e-books. It's not it's purpose.

Still, i realise that with folders + picture viewer, reading scantrads worked ok. Though i woudn't find a few change on the pic viewer.

And, of course, you completely MISSED THE POINT to *my* post - which is that there is NO REASON why the accelerometer code needed to be enabled at such a close tie to the folder management code. If Bookeen had followed the three rules I posted, then the Gen3 would already have avoided the need to "disable" the accelerometer or add in the MP3 code - which, BTW, the Gen3 already had the ability to play.

Unless i'm wrong, that pretty much what bookeen did. Grab Gen 3, strip mp3, add accelerometer.
An other problem might be adapting the firmware to lower spec gen-3.

And, yeah, sure, copy-past code is easy

Agreed. Seconded. If Bookeen does not change the policy they use to handle this issues I will buy my christmas gifts (four readers needed) from some other company.

Bookeen brought all this negativity on themselves....It is outrageous that they would make a big show about publicly announcing the firmware being installed on Cybooks at the French meetup and not have a plan in place to distribute the new firmware to all users within days or at least weeks of their pre-release.

I was glad when I heard they were going to upgrade Cybooks at the meetup because it confirmed that there really was an update, and I expected I would finally be able to update my Cybook shortly after the meetup.

My belief now is that all expectations about Bookeen are wrong, except for this one: "In the end, Bookeen will disappoint and frustrate."

And when the firmware with mobi and the one with ePub will be out, about what all of you will be whining? I doubt that Bookeen will want you to be anger about them, especially now when they need their customer base to support them. If they didn't release the firmware, they should have plenty of goo reason that we may not understand until we see why. As I know Bookeen is a small company with a few people, and they may didn't have enought manpower to correct all bugs, add functionality, design new products, contact resellers, modify the website to add new products etc...

Since it seems the ePub firmware is ready and working on Opus, but Mobipocket one is not, I'm guessing the current showstopper is some bug in MobiPocket firmware - and that Bookeen wants to release ePub and Mobipocket firmware update at the same time.

First thing - correct bugs! Second thing - fulfill promises made concerning updated features set! *THIRD* thing - don't piss all over resellers (Yep. NAEB.)! Fourth thing to do - develop alternative models...

And yes, if Bookeen hasn't made it possible to easily swap between mobi and epub firmware, I'm gonna continue to vent. If Bookeen doesn't make a LiveSD version available, I'm gonna vent. If Bookeen doesn't take the profit-oriented approach of creating a market for firmware that will also run on the other EB-600 clones... well, that's just poor marketing.

For your fifth points, I think that the one who do market error are you not bookeen..

Allowing to make clones always come to the original maker to diseapear or nearly. IBM made the first IBM-PC, they allow other to make clones, looks now, they are not the company who sell the most PC. Apple try the same approch at some time, but they need to stop the emoragy or they will no more exist now. Selling only hardware is not a good approch, and Microsoft is the only exception. Look at Be In. they died. The only other PC OS that work currently other than Windows is Linux, and it's only because Linux is free (of charge, not necessarily because it's open source, even if it's one of the reason)

So By looking what the Computer history give us, I don't see why bookeen will only sell their software (that is not only software application, but system software too since we are on the embedded market, where you have to control the software AND the hardware)

And since Bookeen will surely not stay with the EB600, and I hope will use their own hardware design (the Opus is one first example) Making software for other device where the software is crap and their sells are too marginal. No it's really not a good business plan

Yes, OK, agreed, we all know that... But why, for heavens sake, they're hiding from us then? We've heared nothing from Michael (posted a few weeks ago for Bookeen) or any other offical. There is NO news on their website, blog or a press release or here on MR...

And if there are really problems that keep them from releasing the firmware to the public, why on earth not tell us so???

Something in the line of:
"WE'RE TERRIBLY SORRY, BUT DUE TO TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES WE NEED ANOTHER FEW WEEKS TO FINISH THE ALREADY PROMISED FIRMWARE UPDATE. WE'LL GIVE YOU THE RELEASE DATE ASAP."

And if in need, they can go into more detail and blame it on the Opus or new bugs uncovered since the french meetup or difficulties with older models or whatever... But at least a lifesign (other then BUY OUR NEW OPUS) would be nice.

Never buy anything from Bookeen based on what might be. Only buy based on what is now. We know Bookeen has a bad habit of not doing what they say and you well and truly may have two devices with different formats because of this.

You cannot blame Bookeen for Mobipocket's stupidity. So no, I don't see a LiveSD firmware as that might break agreements. And I don't see swapping firmware to be any easier then it is now. These are issues that are not Bookeen's fault and venting will just be silly.

Geraldo: I completly agree with your view, They need to be more open than actually. I serioulsy think that they are overbooked by a lot of thing. Maybe bad things, but I hope that is good things

I know that they read this forum, but they do not necessarily want to be known as bookeen's team and they don't want to use Mobileread as a new ground for costumer support and I undersand why. Do you like to have 50k private message per day for things that are answered a lot of times? Me not. If you look closely, Michael had a few post on his counter, and only post times to times. Maybe they (he) should post more often.

I know they are reorganizing. Maybe we will have some good news soon? (and have more communication by the way) But I doubt that they will be as much as verbose as RobertB of Astak that merly use MobileRead as a ad and blog of even things like commercial contracts that I think is not a good thing to speak in public area...
